Turmeric (Curcuma longa) belongs to the ginger family and originates from South Asia. The rhizome is used, which, due to its high curcumin content, gives it its characteristic intense yellow colour. In Indian cuisine turmeric is indispensable as a main ingredient in curry powder; in the Ayurvedic tradition the plant has been used for millennia. Curcumin is naturally poorly soluble in water – therefore it is often combined with piperine from black pepper in food supplements or offered in specialised formulations.
