St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a wild plant native to Europe that prefers sunny verges and meadows. It takes its name from St John's Day on 24 June, around which the plant is in full bloom. If you hold the leaves up to the light, small translucent dots can be seen — hence the Latin epithet "perforatum". Among its main constituents are hypericin, which gives the flowers their red colour when crushed, as well as hyperforin and flavonoids. St John's wort is one of the best-studied plants in European herbal medicine.
