Johanniskraut (Hypericum perforatum) ist eine in Europa heimische Wildpflanze, die bevorzugt an sonnigen Wegrändern und Wiesen wächst. Ihren Namen verdankt sie dem Johannistag am 24. Juni, um den herum die Pflanze in voller Blüte steht. Hält man die Blätter gegen das Licht, sind kleine durchscheinende Punkte erkennbar – daher der lateinische Beiname „perforatum". Zu den wichtigsten Inhaltsstoffen zählen Hypericin, das den Blüten ihre rote Farbe beim Zerreiben verleiht, sowie Hyperforin und Flavonoide. Johanniskraut ist eine der am besten erforschten Pflanzen der europäischen Kräuterkunde.
