Melilotus officinalis (yellow sweet clover), also known as honey clover, is a biennial plant in the legume family (Fabaceae) that is widespread across Europe and Asia. The yellow-flowering plant favours roadsides, fallow ground and embankments and can grow up to 1.5 metres high. Its name comes from its ability to thrive on stony soils. The main constituents include coumarins, in particular melilotoside, flavonoids and saponins. The characteristic hay-like scent of dried sweet clover is due to the coumarin released. In European herbal tradition the flowers and the flowering herb are mainly used.
