Cordyceps
Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) is a medicinal mushroom originally found on the high plateaux of Tibet and the Himalayas at altitudes above 3,000 metres. In the wild it grows as a parasite on caterpillars, which is why it is also known as the "caterpillar fungus". Cordyceps has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 1,500 years and was long regarded as a precious commodity, once valued as highly as gold. Today Cordyceps is cultivated for food supplements. Characteristic constituents include polysaccharides, cordycepin and adenosine.
