Chlorella

The name "Chlorella" comes from Latin and roughly means "little, young green". The spherical microalgae are highly evolved but only microscopically visible single-celled organisms that have existed for over two million years despite drastic changes to their living conditions. For this reason, Chlorella is of great interest to scientists and is well researched. There are 24 different species of Chlorella, with the freshwater algae Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorella pyrenoidosa among the best-known; they differ only slightly in their nutrient composition and therefore affect the human body in much the same way. For use in dietary supplements, Chlorella is cultivated under controlled, pure conditions, since algae harvested from local waters cannot be used due to their tendency to absorb toxins. In addition to filtration, drying and pulverisation, an additional processing step is required in which the cell wall of the robust Chlorella alga is broken down to increase bioavailability. This allows the valuable nutrients and vital compounds to be better absorbed by the body. The powder can be stirred into juice and other drinks, sprinkled over food, or taken in tablet form with plenty of water.
