Passion flower
The passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a climbing plant of the passionflower family, originally native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. It was named by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century, who saw symbols of Christ’s Passion in the striking flowers – for example the crown of thorns in the filaments and the nails in the three styles. The herb, meaning the above‑ground parts of the plant, is used and contains, among other constituents, flavonoids such as chrysin and vitexin as well as harman alkaloids. In European herbal tradition passionflower has held an established place since its introduction from the New World.
