Frankincense (Boswellia) is a tree resin obtained by making incisions in the bark of various Boswellia species. The trees grow in the arid regions of India, the Middle East and East Africa. Frankincense was already a valuable trade commodity in antiquity — in the Bible it is mentioned as one of the gifts of the Three Wise Men. The most important species for dietary supplements is Boswellia serrata (Indian frankincense), whose resin contains the characteristic compounds known as boswellic acids. In the Ayurvedic tradition frankincense has been used for millennia and is referred to there as "Salai Guggul". In dietary supplements frankincense is usually offered as a standardised extract in capsule form.
