Lemon balm
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to the eastern Mediterranean. Its name derives from the Greek word 'melissa' for honeybee – the plant is a valued forage for bees. The leaves give off a fresh lemon scent when crushed, due to the essential oil they contain, whose main constituents are citral and citronellal. In European herbal tradition, lemon balm has been used since the Middle Ages.
