Milk thistle
Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a plant of the daisy family (Asteraceae), native to the Mediterranean region and now found worldwide. It takes its name from a legend that drops of the Virgin Mary's milk fell onto the leaves — hence the characteristic white patches on the leaves. The most important active constituent is silymarin, a complex of flavonolignans that is concentrated mainly in the fruits (achenes) of the plant. Silymarin is composed of several individual compounds, with silibinin regarded as the main component. Milk thistle is one of the best-researched plants in European herbal medicine.
