Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is a common meadow plant across Europe belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). The perennial plant, with its globular pink‑red flower heads, is not only an important forage plant in agriculture but also a valued bee forage. Red clover contains isoflavones as characteristic constituents — plant compounds that are structurally similar to human oestrogen and are therefore referred to as phytoestrogens. The main isoflavones in red clover are Biochanin A, Formononetin, Genistein and Daidzein. In dietary supplements red clover is usually offered as a standardised extract.
