Astaxanthin
Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid produced by the freshwater microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. The alga releases astaxanthin as a protective mechanism against environmental influences, colouring the surrounding water blood-red. In nature the alga serves, among other things, as food for wild salmon – hence the characteristic reddish colour of their flesh.
