The spice plant oregano, botanically known as Origanum vulgare, originates from the Mediterranean region and Asia Minor. The perennial subshrub from the mint family grows up to 80 cm tall and blooms purple-red. Its name derives from the Greek word "oros" for mountain and "ganos" for adornment or splendour.
In its native habitat the wild and cultivated plant grows on dry, sunny slopes and gives off an aromatic, spicy scent. Even here it grows in almost every herb garden.
