The artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is a perennial of the daisy family (Asteraceae) and originates from the Mediterranean region. The bracts of the fleshy flower heads are commonly eaten as a vegetable. The artichoke was named Medicinal Plant of the Year 2003. It contains the bitter compound cynarin.
