The artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is a perennial plant of the Asteraceae family native to the Mediterranean. The bracts of the fleshy flower are popular as an edible vegetable. The artichoke was named Medicinal Plant of the Year 2003. It contains the bitter compound cynarin.
