travel sickness

News

What could be nicer on a hot summer's day than drifting on the water? Whether swimming, paddling, surfing or boating, all of these bring the welcome cooling.

If only it weren't for a "but" … and an even bigger "but" on top of that.

Especially on a boat trip there can be a major problem, namely travel sickness.

There are people for whom the dream of a cruise turns into a nightmare. There are certainly many of you who have no problems with boats at all. But some people react so sensitively to motion that merely seeing a boat on the water makes them feel sick.

My husband and my son recently delivered a friend's sailboat from Fort Lauderdale in Florida to New Bedford in Massachusetts. You read that right: the two of them sailed almost the entire US East Coast – that's around 1,930 kilometres! And believe me when I say they did not motor along the coastline, but went out on the sea in search of the best route.

Homeopathy for Travel SicknessLeitsymptome und Nosoden - Henry C. Allen

Before they set off I put together a small 'boat medicine kit' for the two of them, containing the main remedies they might need on their journey.

In fact, on the very first leg they had to navigate waves three to five metres high! Severe travel sickness included — not pleasant in the least!

Right at the start of the voyage my son took the remedies I'd packed for the two men and was soon back on his feet. My husband didn't have to take anything, as he is an old hand when it comes to sailing.

So what did I pack for their sailing trip?

You might immediately think of Tabacum, which I can well understand, especially if you have read my post Da wird mir übel: Gruppenzwang und was man dagegen tun kann. And you would be right — a tube of Tabacum went on the trip. Of course this remedy is not the only one against travel sickness. As you know — and you can feel free to repeat it out loud after me — in homeopathy there are many roads that lead to Rome!

For this reason I'd like to introduce two more remedies:

Cocculus indicus

Cocculus indicus: This remedy is indicated in cases where nausea is triggered by watching moving objects. Accompanying symptoms alongside the nausea are tiredness, dizziness and weakness, or a 'queasy' feeling in the stomach. The nausea leads to an aversion to the sight or smell of food. Because of the dizziness, weakness and headaches the sufferer needs to lie down. Cocculus is usually taken in potency C30, at the onset of travel sickness every 15 minutes, later every half hour, until a marked improvement occurs.

PetroleumHomöopathische Taschenapotheke für Freizeit, Sport, zu Hause und unterwegs - Eberhard Laubender

Petroleum: For persistent nausea characterised by excessive salivation, vomiting, dizziness or headaches, Petroleum is the remedy of choice. As a key symptom this form of travel sickness is improved by eating. Petroleum is taken according to the same schedule, initially (in the first hour) every 15 minutes and thereafter once an hour until the symptoms have improved.

If no improvement occurs after the first four to five doses — according to this protocol that would be roughly after the first hour — the remedy very likely does not fit your specific symptoms. Try another remedy then.

Homeopathic prophylaxis

Homeopathy can sometimes also be taken prophylactically. If you generally suffer from travel sickness, you can take the appropriate remedy before setting off. Let the well-chosen remedy dissolve under the tongue just before departure. If, contrary to expectations, some travel sickness does occur, take the remedy again.

Please don't forget to pack a small selection of homeopathic remedies in your travel first-aid kit so that you can also help fellow travellers who are struggling with travel sickness. It's a good opportunity to show that homeopathy works.

Then the boat trip will really be a pleasure thanks to homeopathy! (If only there were a homeopathic remedy that could keep pirates away and attract fish!)

Yours sincerely,

Your
