Lydia woke in the middle of the night with a terrible, barking cough. She could hardly draw a breath! For a moment she feared she would suffocate. It felt as if there were a plug in her throat. Her larynx was oversensitive, as if the slightest swallow or the smallest movement would make her cough violently.
She was frightened, and the more frightened she became, the worse the coughing got!
This is a common condition that scares everyone who experiences it. But Lydia was confident because of her knowledge of homeopathy.
Cough with fear – a key indicating symptom
Fear and anxiety associated with a croupy cough were good indications for Spongia tosta. Since Lydia knew that emotional excitement also worsened the cough, she added this symptom to her personal remedy picture. Add laryngitis or a hypersensitive larynx, and Lydia had the three-legged stool – homoeopathically speaking!
But do you know what is even more stable than a three-legged stool? Yes, you guessed it... a four-legged chair! The famous homeopath Dr William Boericke gave Lydia that fourth leg when he wrote in his Materia Medica about Spongia: "Awakes with a start and the feeling of suffocating, generally worse after sleep or when he falls asleep into an aggravation."
Frequent dosing is important
Lydia hauled herself out of bed and reached for her little tube of Spongia tosta 30, which had a permanent place in her well-stocked homeopathic medicine cabinet. For this condition the remedy is usually taken every 15 minutes to hourly until the cough (and the associated sensation of suffocation) has markedly improved. Dosing is then resumed if the symptoms reappear. More information on dosage and potency can be found here.
Classical Spongia symptoms
I've written about Spongia several times and, in summary, it can be said:
- A cough that sounds as if a saw were cutting through wood is an indication for Spongia 30.
- If the symptoms are temporarily better from drinking warm fluids, this is also often an indication for Spongia.
- If the cough is made worse by cold drinks or by talking, Spongia is often the right remedy.
After a few doses of Spongia, Lydia was able to sleep peacefully again. She kept the remedy to hand until the end of her respiratory illness.
That is the advantage of a well-stocked homeopathic medicine cabinet. Had Lydia not had the needed remedy at home, she would have spent a restless night, gasping for air and denying her sick body the rest it needed.
A well-stocked home medicine cabinet has many advantages
Knowledge alone sometimes isn't enough. For this reason certain homeopathic remedies should always be kept at home. Sure, you can run to the pharmacy in the middle of the night – IF the pharmacy is open and IF you are physically able to get there on foot or by car. Alternatively you can certainly order the necessary homeopathic remedies by post – and cough relentlessly for days while waiting for the postman.
But why not simply own a large homeopathic medicine cabinet? You may recall that I have used remedies from 1918 that still worked. A well-stocked home medicine cabinet can therefore last much longer than we might think.
This is one of the many good pieces of news that homeopathy brings us. Spread the word! A famous quote often attributed to Benjamin Franklin puts it succinctly: "If you fail to prepare, you are preparing to fail."
Lydia made it – and passed with flying colours!
Homeopathy helps – spread the word!
Warmly,
Yours
