The use of homeopathic remedies for pain is not comparable to taking conventional medicines.
Painkillers such as Ibuprofen, Paracetamol, Naproxen or opioids are, at best, comparable to a sticking plaster: they temporarily cover the symptoms so we don't have to think about them.
That may work in the short term. But because these medicines do nothing to treat the underlying condition causing the pain, they usually have to be taken repeatedly, since pain often inevitably returns.
Homeopathy tackles the problem at the root
Homeopathy, on the other hand, works persistently to remedy the underlying problem that primarily causes the pain. It does not cover up the symptoms or suppress the illness. Instead, homeopathy stimulates the body's self-healing powers in a gentle, careful and natural way.
No one wants a teething child to scream as if being skewered just because it was given ibuprofen, whose known side effects include asthma and liver disease. In the past paediatricians even prescribed morphine syrup.
No — we want the accompanying teething pain treated so well that we don't notice it the next time a tooth breaks through.
No woman wants to take medication month after month to ease her menstrual pain, only to start all over again a few weeks later. No, no and no again!

In practice homeopathy is much more elegant. It is broader in its application and pursues higher aims: it seeks to remedy the problem underlying the symptom.
Cimicifuga racemosa is therefore the next remedy in my series on homeopathy for pain.
Cimicifuga for stabbing heart pain
It is one of my best remedies for angina pectoris. My father always had Cimicifuga on hand when his angina bothered him. I was sure it would not only relieve his pain but generally reduce his symptoms to a minimum. Many sufferers have noticed an improvement even though they always carry their prescription nitroglycerin.
In Robin Murphy's Clinical Materia Medica, angina is described as "a needle‑like pain in the heart ... that spreads across the chest to the back and the left arm, that feels numb and as if bound to the side".
Angina pectoris should in principle not be simply ignored. But fortunately this homeopathic remedy can also be taken on the way to hospital. It can even act so quickly that you feel better by the time you reach the car park outside the clinic. I have seen it work that quickly!
The versatile indications of Cimicifuga
Moreover, Murphy's MetaRepertory mentions that the homeopathically potentised Cimicifuga racemosa should be considered for the following conditions:
- Rheumatism in the back and neck
- Sciatica
- Shooting, throbbing pains in the eyes; severe pain in the eyeballs
- Labour pains felt in the thighs (labour pains are by nature painful, but if they are very severe or persist too long, we may need to intervene and assist the body. Stabbing pains during labour – especially in the lumbar region or across the hips and into the back of the thighs – would be a reason to consider Cimicifuga.)
- Uterine prolapse with cramps
- Cramp‑like menstrual pains that improve when lying down
- Limb pains like electric shocks
- A general sore, bruised feeling all over the body, as if from bruising, worsened by touch.
Just look at the wide range of pain qualities that Cimicifuga has successfully treated. It is definitely a homeopathic remedy you should have in your well‑stocked home medicine cabinet. I cannot offer precise treatment protocols for conditions here, but Cimicifuga is generally taken in the 30c potency twice daily until the symptoms have improved significantly. Further information on dosage and potency can be found here.
I have practised and taught homeopathy for almost 40 years. How long can one be enthusiastic about something? Well, when it is such a brilliant, elegant and effective paradigm, one can be passionate about it for a lifetime.
Pain affects all of us sooner or later. Some people must endure pain for a lifetime. Homeopathy, however, can contribute to pain relief by addressing the underlying cause deeply.
Our body is a marvel. Sometimes it simply needs a gentle stimulus, the kind only homeopathy can provide.
