Homeopathy for at-home dental care

News

Margo is a delicate ten-year-old girl with a long history of dental problems. However, it is not Margo who suffers most from this fact, but her mother. Although it was Margo who regularly sat in the dentist's chair, her mother must come to terms with the painful thought that she had not always made the wisest decisions regarding her daughter's dental health. Mrs Winski must endure the constant pain one feels when one has lost faith in modern medicine.

For Mrs Winski it felt like a defeat when she realised that she had chosen the wrong dentist for her daughter and had allowed her to be treated with what she called "archaic" methods: amalgam fillings, antibiotics for recurrent gum abscesses, strong painkillers and general anaesthesia because of the girl's great fear of the dentist. All of this was done without carefully informing them of the possible consequences of these interventions. It was the consequences of the dental treatments that weighed particularly heavily on Mrs Winski. She felt guilty because it took years for the problems that had arisen to be resolved. Not only that, but Margo developed food allergies and new caries appeared despite the last dental treatment two years earlier. Like other mothers, Mrs Winski was particularly hard on herself.

Mrs Winski now takes her motherhood seriously and has done her homework. She has not only learned how homeopathy could have helped with dental complaints, but also how she could have treated Margo's fears and nervousness and perhaps even prevented further caries.

The ray of hope in this story is that Margo's mother has meanwhile developed a real knack for selecting the appropriate homeopathic remedy for her daughter. At first she bought a homeopathic book, attended a seminar and spoke on the phone with a homeopath. But the knowledge she has since acquired is mainly the result of her persistent search for answers. Once Mrs Winski committed to a treatment plan, she was rewarded with a lasting improvement in her daughter's dental health. The teeth were hardly ever decayed, abscesses healed and never came back, and Margo could endure dental check-ups with stoic calm. Below I will present the protocol that Mrs Winski used for her daughter Margo.

Calcium phosphoricum and Calcium fluoratum

She first combined Calc phos D6 and Calc fluor D12. These two remedies belong to a form of homeopathy we call Schuessler or tissue salts. They are known for strengthening teeth and bones. The family made it a habit to dissolve four tablets of each remedy in 120 ml of water. Margo learned to take a sip three times a day herself, which amounts to roughly one teaspoon a day. Of course the family also changed their diet and now regularly consume bone broth and unpasteurised kefir.

Aconitum, Hypericum and Nux vomica

Margo is now treated exclusively by a holistic dentist who in principle does not use amalgam fillings. When drilling is necessary, a local anaesthetic is often not even required. This is thanks to the homeopathic Hypericum that Margo takes immediately before her dental visit. And thanks to Aconitum, Margo's fear of the dentist has vanished. Her mother gives her Aconitum on the evening before the appointment, on the day itself immediately after getting up and a third time before entering the surgery. In addition, Mrs Winski knows that Margo's digestive disorders respond very well to Nux vomica 30 (information on potency levels can be found here: D or C potency: that is the question) when the remedy is given twice daily for a week. Mrs Winski is convinced that the digestive problems were due to the antibiotics Margo had to take. With Nux vomica stomach pains, sleep disturbances and the new food intolerances disappeared. This is important because Margo's body needed to recover from the damage to the gut flora that the antibiotics had caused.

For two years now this dental health protocol has been followed in the Winski household. Since then Margo has had no new carious lesions, despite previously needing frequent drilling. The abscesses have not reoccurred – despite the many antibiotics – and Margo can now occasionally eat wheat without any problems. But the truly happy ending to this story is that Margo's fears and nervousness now belong firmly to the past.

Medicine should be our tool and not force us to our knees with side effects and the suppression of symptoms, only for the disease to reappear as soon as the medications stop working. Homeopathy belongs in the hands of mothers and others who care. It cannot replace highly qualified, holistic dentistry, but it can serve as an important support. And sometimes it even saves us one or two trips to the dentist. The nutrition-toothbrush - Johan Wölber / Christian Tennert

Let homeopathy work for you

It goes without saying that homeopathic remedies are not only unique in their effects, but also have the advantage of being free from unwanted side effects. They are what I call "polite and considerate medicines". Isn't that wonderful? Medicine that works and is also harmless. For a guaranteed effect it is, however, essential to take the right remedy in the correct potency and at the correct intervals. This avoids unwanted results. I give you here the information you need to use homeopathy for domestic use with a certain degree of confidence. If I do not specify a potency – the letters and numbers after the remedy name – it is because you need to know more in those circumstances to treat the person effectively. In such cases I recommend that you consult a professional homeopath or study posology (the science of potentisation) in more detail.

If you decide to consider a homeopathic dental treatment more closely, I can recommend two important remedies that you should know well:

Arnica montana

This remedy is usually the first port of call for students of homeopathy and an excellent remedy for treating trauma. In low potency it can produce more or less modest results; in higher potencies – 200 and above – Arnica proves to be a real powerhouse. For the high potencies I urgently advise my students to adhere strictly to homeopathic rules. One should only use them if one has a great deal of knowledge and experience with the remedy or consults a professional homeopath. The use of Arnica C200 is now so widespread among dentists and surgeons here in the USA that even the local press reports on it. The protocol I teach my students is as follows: the day before the procedure Arnica is taken morning and evening. On the morning of the treatment itself it is taken after getting up and once more immediately before the treatment. Arnica prevents infections, minimises shock to the organism, reduces swelling, stops bleeding and calms the patient. The protocol is resumed as soon as possible after the procedure and Arnica is taken every 2–3 hours until the pain has significantly subsided. For severe or persistent pain the remedy can be taken more frequently, e.g. hourly or every two hours.

Hypericum

I remember the time when a filling over 30 years old finally exploded one of my teeth and the tooth had to be extracted. Still in the chair the dentist discovered a small abscess on the jawbone. He promptly scraped out the bone so the inflammation would not spread. No problem. No pain … at least until the anaesthetic wore off. The pain was worse than anything I had experienced before. Bent double with pain I went to the medicine cabinet and took my Hypericum 200. I knew that the 30 potency would do absolutely nothing for such severe pain. In fact I should have started immediately with a very high potency, but I couldn't think straight because of the pain. Pain impairs judgement. I will not tell you which potency I took then, because one needs a great deal of experience to prescribe safely here. But I will tell you that my pain was gone within an hour; I had taken the Hypericum roughly every five minutes. When the pain returned I repeated the remedy, this time every 15 minutes, over 24 hours, then reduced to every one to two hours. From the second day I only needed it occasionally. I was able to manage the pain after that procedure completely without synthetic drugs thanks to my bottle of Hypericum.

Hypericum is given for extremely severe pain, especially when a nerve injury is involved. The more intense the nerve pain, the more specifically indicated Hypericum is. Hypericum also prevents infections and soothes the nerves – without antibiotics, without painkillers and without benzodiazepines. I paid less than €20 for my small bottle of Hypericum and still have enough left to get me through the next dental treatment in the family.

Warmly,

Yours
