It is not uncommon for some people to be unable to smell or taste during a cold or a sinus infection. This phenomenon is as old as humanity itself. In some cases it not only leads to a loss of these two senses, but also to a distortion of taste or smell.
Some would have us believe that this unique symptom occurs only with a particular virus, but in truth it is a faithful companion of many influenza and cold viruses. Sometimes loss or distortion of the senses disappears very quickly; in other cases it can take weeks or even months for smell and taste perception to return to normal.
I'll be honest and advise you to be patient. It's not the end of the world. For most of us, nature will take care of it and restore everything as it should be.
Quick help for colds and sniffles
Of course there are also people for whom the loss of these senses is particularly difficult. I think, for example, of Lucy, who works here in Florida as a cook. Without her fine nose and reliable sense of taste she had to hire a sous-chef to do the tasting in the kitchen for her!
In that case I can of course understand why Lucy wanted to find a quicker solution to her problem. At the moment another cold wave is going around and I want to write a few words on the subject.
Keep your pen at the ready and jot down a big "S". "S" for sniffles, sniffling, sinusitis and Sanguinaria!
Sanguinaria 200 (information on potency levels can be found here: D- or C-potency: that is the question), taken twice daily, is a good acute remedy for loss of smell and taste. Many of you may find the quick answer you're looking for here. Sanguinaria not only restores the function of these two sensory organs, but will also ensure that your sinuses are as clear as they were before the cold. It's an absolute win–win situation.
After Sanguinaria comes Sulphur
But perhaps Sanguinaria is not the right remedy for your situation. I've seen how well it works for some of my clients, but I also know that others respond less reliably. You know: in homeopathy there isn't a single remedy for all eventualities. If you take Sanguinaria and notice no improvement after a few days, Sulphur may be the remedy of choice and is also taken twice daily. I prefer Sulphur for patients who have been struggling with a cold or a sinus infection for some time.
Now please don't tell me you've only been ill for a week – "longer" means exactly that: over a long period. The normal recovery time for a cold is already about 10 to 14 days! In my view the term "longer" only starts after three weeks.
Colchicum and China
Another homeopathic remedy that could be considered is Colchicum. The remedy is indicated in cases of distorted smell, when certain foods, for example, smell metallic, rotten or like something entirely different. I've had several satisfied reports from clients for whom it worked very well after Sanguinaria had no effect. For distorted taste, China is also an option — please bear that in mind.
I bet chef Lucy will be glad to be able to cook again without a sous-chef as soon as her two important senses are working again. Can you imagine cooking without a sense of taste and seasoning with salt or spices? That's certainly no fun at all.
If you are suffering from a summer flu or cold, first be grateful that you are training your immune system in a natural way. Additionally, you can support this process with the indicated homeopathic remedy and alleviate the particularly troublesome symptoms.
And when the next big cold wave sweeps over you and your family, feel free to pass it on, because homeopathy helps!
Warmly,
Yours,
