Homeopathic support during the menopause
by Joette Calabrese

I hear that all too often from women. "Oh-oh, Joette! I've discovered that I have oestrogen dominance!"
Well, that sounds rather alarming at first, but in truth oestrogen dominance is not a real conventional diagnosis. It is the explanation of a diagnosis.
We don't treat oestrogen dominance, because we don't treat one hormone or another as 'dominant'. So we don't need the explanation; we need to know the conventional diagnosis and the symptoms.
The actual diagnosis is no great mystery. It affects every woman at around 42–60 years of age. It is the menopause with symptoms of hot flushes, weight gain and reduced libido.
Endocrine disruptors
This kind of hormonal fluctuation – natural changes that come with ageing – can be further amplified by anything that tinkers with the human endocrine system (e.g. pesticides, plastic in water bottles and food containers, the contraceptive pill, or thyroid problems).
The only reason I mention these possible "causes" is that I want to appeal to all women (and their daughters) to steer clear of these influences. Essentially, however, it is not crucial to truly know what triggered the change.

So what can we do if someone feels the menopause is a rollercoaster? What if she doesn't sail through the menopause because she is overwhelmed by her symptoms? What she does not need are tests. In Practical Homeopathy® we instead use the symptoms to make the best possible choice of remedy.
Sepia and Ammonium carbonicum
I have often written about Sepia 200 as our principal remedy for menopausal complaints. It is usually taken every other day.
Today, however, I would like to draw attention to another excellent remedy for hormonal fluctuations that belongs in every well-stocked homeopathic medicine cabinet: Ammonium carbonicum C200, to be taken every seven to ten days. This remedy should also be considered for early menopausal symptoms!
So there are two good options you can consider, but choose only one or the other. Ammonium carb is suited to more general menopausal complaints, while Sepia is specifically suited to hormonally induced headaches, vaginal pain and reduced libido. But as always I suggest you study both remedies thoroughly in a materia medica.
Ammonium carb does not act quickly, however. It can take months before improvements occur. But many women tell me that their symptoms are nowhere near as bad as before. And that's what we're aiming for, isn't it?

Give the hormonal rollercoaster the cold shoulder and spread the word – homeopathy helps!
Warmly,
Yours
