Most of the time we pay little attention to our teeth; we simply assume they do their job. They help us eat and speak. They support the structures of the face and skull and thus even influence the posture of our neck and spine.
But woe betide when a tooth hurts ... ouch! There are few pains more intense than toothache. It is as if you have a small jackhammer in your mouth – and an unforgiving one at that.
The classic: Hypericum perforatum
Most people think of Hypericum perforatum for toothache. And rightly so, when a nerve has been affected or injured. In fact, Hypericum has proven very effective for nerve pain, which is naturally often involved in toothache.
The sensitive one: Pulsatilla
Pulsatilla nigricans is another remedy that can generally be considered, especially when the pain is triggered by hot food or drink.
The all-rounder: Coffea cruda
But there is another remedy you should consider, particularly when the pain is very severe. (I am talking about exquisite tooth pain here.) If nothing else has helped and cold applications bring some relief, Coffea cruda 200, taken twice daily until the pain improves considerably, can help. You can find more on dosing and potency of the remedy here.
I have already written about Coffea in earlier blog posts: for palpitations from too much chocolate , for severe itching that keeps one awake at night, for anxiety and even for fainting from joyful excitement. Toothache is another reason to keep Coffea cruda in your home medicine cabinet for homeopathic remedies.
I do not promise that Coffea has an effect on pain comparable to, for example, morphine. But in my experience, people using this remedy have been able to achieve enough relief to make life bearable again. Sometimes this slight improvement in pain is all that is needed until the underlying condition can be fully treated.
When nothing else helps
Interestingly, many of my clients who suffer from toothache report that absolutely nothing helps the pain. So I ask in more detail: "What do you do about it?"
Often they then explain: "Well, I just drink cold water or hold an ice pack to my jaw. The pain does not completely stop, but it gets better."

Aha! Even if my clients might not describe their behaviour as healing, they are guided by the instincts of their bodies, and that is an important clue for anyone interested in homeopathy when selecting the appropriate remedy.
Listen to your gut
Here is another example: abdominal pain. I have female clients who cannot tolerate anything pressing on their stomach. This can go so far that they only wear loose clothing so the waistband cannot press. Conversely, there are clients who press their arms against their stomach because it feels good!
None of those affected make a conscious decision to behave this way to ease their symptoms. They simply do it instinctively! These unconscious behaviours are cues from our bodies that can point to the right remedy.
Bear this in mind whenever you observe yourself or your loved ones. As you know, observation plays an important role in homeopathy for choosing the remedy, for the duration of administration and for the right time to stop it.
Get Coffea cruda into your home – homeopathy helps, so spread the word!
Warmly,
Yours,
