Accompanying the terminally ill and those who are dying presents particular challenges for homoeopaths. Above all it is about alleviating suffering and improving quality of life – while remaining open to the remarkable inner healing processes that can significantly ease the transition at the end of life.
As at the beginning of life in obstetrics, palliative homoeopathic treatment at the end of life requires only a manageable number of remedies.
The potential uses of homoeopathic remedies for the typical psychological and physical problems of the terminal phase are illustrated with exemplary case studies of restlessness, anxiety, shortness of breath, weakness or anorexia.
Methodological particularities are also discussed, such as the weighting of symptoms, choice of potency, repetition and switching of remedies, as well as the question of using a constitutional remedy when the vital force is nearly extinguished.
