R-alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is the naturally active form of lipoic acid. This is a sulphur-containing essential fatty acid. It is water and fat-soluble, and therefore able to cross the blood-brain barrier. This property makes it useful, for example, during chelation treatment to remove mercury and other heavy metals from the body.

In its natural R form lipoic acid acts as a coenzyme in the cells’ power stations, the mitochondria, where it fulfils important tasks in energy metabolism. It can also regenerate depleted antioxidants in the body and capture free radicals.
