The mukul myrrh tree, also called Indian myrrh, grows under extreme conditions in India and North Africa and produces a resin that was exported as far as Rome in antiquity. Guggul is a gum resin, also called bdellium resin or gummi bdellium. The yellowish resin is obtained by making incisions in the trunk of the mukul myrrh tree (Indian myrrh) and then air-dried.

Guggul is not only available in capsule form but its natural resin is also used as incense. In India it is traditionally burned to repel mosquitoes.
