What is royal jelly?
Royal jelly is the enzyme-rich and nutrient-rich secretion produced by worker bees, which they use to feed the queen bee and bee larvae. It is, so to speak, the “power food” for the brood, but primarily for the “queen mother”. Her sole task is the reproduction of her colony. Royal jelly is also referred to as bee milk or queen feeding juice.
The use of royal jelly by humans dates back to antiquity and to other cultural areas such as China and India. It is taken orally and is also used in cosmetics.
How the queen bee secures her colony’s survival with royal jelly
From hatching until their third day of life, all bee larvae in a colony receive royal jelly. For the queen bee, royal jelly remains her only food throughout her life. As a result she lives for three to four years.
A worker bee that receives royal jelly only until its third day of life attains a lifespan of between 30 and 40 days. If a queen larva receives royal jelly for just two days longer than a worker larva, it will have already grown to more than double the size. In addition it is larger and more robust than its nest-mates.
What role does 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) play in royal jelly?
