The manufacturer states:

In the body, the sleep hormone is produced in the metabolism of the amino acid L‑tryptophan. First, serotonin is formed from it, and subsequently melatonin is synthesised from that.
Its production is controlled by a specific area of the brain: the pineal gland. In light it suppresses the production of melatonin, while in darkness this suppression is lifted.

I never believed that melatonin could help me. I'm all the happier that I tried it again after all. My sleep is much deeper and longer than before. Sometimes I still wake up in the middle of the night, then I take another J capsule and fall asleep again!!! I have just reordered for the next 3 months. - I don't take them every night though. Only when I think or feel it would be better. Glad to have found such a natural sleep aid. I have been sooo sleep deprived since my menopause....
