Green-lipped mussels to delight the active
Green-lipped mussel capsules from Unimedica contain the highly dosed powder from the pure New Zealand green-lipped mussel. The characteristic ingredient of this mussel species, the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), also occur naturally in our joint fluid, cartilage and connective tissues. There they ensure the necessary moisture. The green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), also known as the green-shelled mussel, belongs to the mussel family and is native to New Zealand. It has long been highly valued by the Māori and used in their traditional medicine.
GAG for mobility — no joke!
The mussel with the brightly green "rim" is freeze-dried and transported to Germany. Here it is processed into powder in certified facilities under controlled conditions. The powder is then encapsulated in bovine hard gelatin capsules. This method preserves the mussel's many valuable constituents, with particular focus on the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Our capsules contain 7.5 mg (1.5%) of these acidic polysaccharides per capsule. Due to their negative charge they can bind water and thus help, for example, to keep tissues elastic and serve as a biological lubricant.
What are glycosaminoglycans and why are they important?
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are linear polysaccharides made up of repeating disaccharides, comparable to a string of beads. They are also known as mucopolysaccharides. They occur in many biological macromolecules, for example bound to proteins. GAGs form the scaffold of many fibrous substances. They can take up many times their own weight in water, which makes them very elastic. GAGs include hyaluronic acid, heparin, chondroitin sulphate and keratan sulphate.
