When mammography is painful

Treating Breast Tissue Injuries Homeopathically

Pain during mammography

October is the one month of the year when the colour pink pushes into every little crevice of our awareness.

I personally love this colour and have it everywhere: in the kitchen, in the office and, of course, in the wardrobe… Pink is all around me, especially since I moved to Florida. But I really can’t stand the pink ribbons that are being displayed on every corner right now.

Why? Because I believe this is a marketing campaign intended to funnel a lot of money into certain coffers. The American Cancer Society has existed since 1913 — 107 years now — and yet there is still no cure for this disease. What are they actually doing?

I can tell you: they want to convince you to have a mammogram every year.

Breast Tissue and Injuries

Basically, I wouldn’t need to write anything about breasts because you all know what they are. Our breasts are highly sensitive tissue that, due to their exposed position, are very susceptible to injury — all year round.

Injuries to breast tissue from seat belts, for example, can be very painful. When a seat belt tightens quickly in a car accident, it is usually our breasts that take the worst of the impact.

In my article Breast Pain: When Even a Hug Is Too Much you can read how to treat breast injuries homeopathically.

Breasts are not only delicate structures but also have to do an unbelievable amount of work. Breastfeeding mothers know how painful it can be when a baby overfeeds. I wrote about that in my blog The 3 Most Important Homeopathic Remedies for Treating Mastitis (mastitis is a painful inflammation of the breast that frequently occurs in breastfeeding mothers).

So while we should be aware year-round that our breasts are prone to injury, pink October focuses our attention on one particularly sensitive subject: mammography.

Mammography is one of the screening examinations recommended to all women from a certain age. And it is recommended at regular intervals.

I am a big fan of routine, but not when someone else imposes a routine on me. Regardless of my personal history or any family cancer history, and without discussing the associated risks. You reach a certain age and suddenly you’re sent off for a mammogram. If you haven’t had a mammogram yet, just read the words of one of my staff: “Imagine a burger press…”

Breast Pain from Mammography

An earlier client of mine — let’s call her Margaret — had perfectly healthy breasts until she had her first mammogram. The pressure applied to the breast tissue during that procedure produced unbearable pain for her. Every day. And not just for a few days.

In the years after the mammogram it became clear that Margaret was suffering from chronic breast pain. She certainly would not subject herself to a mammogram every year again — especially not while still dealing with the aftermath of that first breast examination! Her doctor shrugged and had little to offer beyond painkillers and reassurance.

At this point I should perhaps mention that Margaret worked as a receptionist for her doctor.

Margaret’s husband became increasingly worried about his wife, because the pain affected her entire life. Margaret had already endured the pain for three years when she came to see me.

Arnica for Breast Injuries

When we have to put our sensitive breasts into a burger press, it amounts to a traumatic experience. So I chose a homeopathic remedy renowned for soft-tissue injuries:

Arnica C200, taken twice daily until the pain had clearly improved.

Don’t forget that Margaret had suffered chronic pain for three years. Ten days after starting Arnica she phoned me to say that her breast pain had gone.

Gone, vanished!!

You read that correctly — for the first time in three years the pain was no longer there.

The pain caused by the mammogram had been completely unnecessary. To make matters worse, her doctor didn’t really know what to do about the pain that had developed (mastalgia).

Until homeopathy came to the rescue. I can give you countless such examples, because I see it daily in my practice.

You may have noticed I describe Margaret as a “former client”. Margaret’s pain returned only once, briefly — and we treated it again with Arnica C200, twice daily for a few days — after that she remained pain-free and in excellent health.

A few years later I ran into Margaret by chance in the supermarket and she told me she was still pain-free — and very grateful for Arnica!

Arnica for Prevention

Every October I receive many enquiries from women asking whether they should have a mammogram and whether they can take Arnica C200 prophylactically. In those cases I answer succinctly: “Of course!”

If you know you have a soft-tissue procedure ahead of you, you can of course take Arnica beforehand. It’s essentially the same principle as preparing for an operation. And because the pain after a mammogram is due to soft-tissue injury, a woman can protect herself homeopathically and recover faster afterwards.

Incidentally, I would ask you to have a mammogram only if it is truly (and I mean truly) indicated, and not just because the date on the calendar says so.

And if you’re interested: I am now 68 years old and I have never had a mammogram. Please spread the word, because homeopathy helps — all women and especially this month.

Warmly, Joette
