Hypo- and hyperthyroidism – homeopathy for the thyroid

Margaret was an unusually charismatic woman. With her fashionable style she simply looked stunning – "old-fashioned" is not a word that would come to mind when you saw her. Her wardrobe was not perfectly coordinated, but her aristocratic bearing made everything about her look effortlessly elegant.
Margaret spent the summer months on Martha’s Vineyard, where her long, sun‑tanned legs attracted many looks… mainly from men, but not only. I cannot speak openly about what went through those men’s minds, but I am certain that Margaret knew exactly what impression she left behind. She would, more or less coquettishly, throw her long hair over her shoulders. The result was a certain "male chaos" that she trailed in her wake. She was one of those women who constantly changed partners and entered new relationships, largely because she enjoyed the challenge.
Tiredness and hair loss
But one day – it was a weekend, after a friend’s vernissage in Soho – everything changed. Somehow her verve had gone and been replaced by a leaden tiredness. She was no longer her energetic self and preferred to spend the whole day in bed. Before long Margaret realised that her lightness and the self‑confidence she had taken for granted were gone. She simply wasn’t herself anymore. She was also losing hair and shedding more than she liked.
At first the symptoms were relatively mild, but when she eventually saw her GP, Margaret was already alarmed. "It feels like I have a chronic flu. Worse: I’ve gained ten kilograms." She was more worried about this last fact than anything else.
Her GP suspected an underactive thyroid and the lab results confirmed the suspicion. Margaret’s TSH levels (thyroid‑stimulating hormone) were high and he recommended drug treatment. It was of course not a cure, but it would help with the symptoms.
Drugs with side effects
Margaret read the list of side effects and hesitated about taking the medication at all. In the small print (Margaret had to read it with a magnifying glass) there was mention of anxiety, mood swings, hair loss, weight gain, chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath and epileptic seizures. She already knew some of these symptoms and didn’t want any more of them!
Next Margaret consulted a psychiatrist about her anxieties, who also recommended medication. "No, thanks," she thought. Of course she could have simply given in and taken the drugs, but that was not her way. In fact one of her friends had already asked why she had such a strong aversion. But on this point Margaret insisted on a different solution: "Definitely not. I want the problem fixed."
From then on Margaret wore her hair so as to conceal the bald patches on her head (to be honest: no one except Margaret had really noticed the hair loss). And because she was stubborn by nature,
she set about finding an alternative solution to her problem. A colleague who had successfully treated the nodules in her thyroid with a homeopathic remedy gave her the contact details of a homeopath she could recommend.
The homeopath did not live nearby, but Margaret made an appointment for a telephone consultation straight away.
Homeopathy – an individualised approach
Even the first conversation gave Margaret hope. The homeopath did not promise that the underactive thyroid would be cured, but offered a different explanation for her problem: "Your body has fallen out of balance and is therefore reacting with these symptoms. Using these symptoms we will find which homeopathic remedy can bring the imbalance back into order. Once the illness reacts on the energetic level to the homeopathic remedy, the body no longer needs to respond in the same way and the symptoms disappear. The reaction to the illness – what we call the symptoms – is effectively 'antidoted'.
Margaret was very taken with the word 'antidoted'. Within a few weeks of taking the homeopathic remedy Iodum her tiredness noticeably eased. She asked her homeopath whether she had actually taken iodine. Her therapist’s answer fascinated her: she explained that while iodine is very important for the thyroid, taking elemental iodine can sometimes be problematic. Homeopathic iodine behaves differently from the material element. Homeopathic iodine is diluted according to a standardised mathematical method, which removes the possible side effects of iodine while retaining its positive effect. Homeopathy is a medical paradigm used worldwide and many doctors, practices and hospitals across Europe successfully apply the concept. There are numerous studies showing that homeopathy is not only effective but also safe.
Margaret didn’t care much about those studies; she simply wanted to get well. The first thing she noticed was that the hair loss eased and she was no longer pulling out handfuls of hair. Then her energy returned. Less than four weeks after taking the remedy she had regained her old verve. The best thing, however, was the pounds that seemed to fall away as if by magic and the tiredness that disappeared decisively.
Symptom by symptom the illness seemed to dissolve into nothing. As naturally and effortlessly as she had felt before the thyroid illness. A few months later the thyroid values were tested and, lo and behold, Margaret’s results were within the normal range! For her this was proof that homeopathy had worked. Around that time she bumped into Alphonso, an old acquaintance, in the theatre; he took her hand and whispered an enthusiastic "Sprezzatura!" into her ear.
That evening at home she looked up the meaning of this wonderful word: "the art of nonchalance with effortless elegance" the dictionary said. Ah… that was the confirmation that she had her old life back.
Homeopathy for thyroid disorders
The fact that the thyroid and iodine have a lot to do with each other has long been known. It should therefore come as no surprise that iodine has been used homeopathically for decades. As a raw substance – i.e. in its natural state – iodine can cause thyroid problems. For precisely this reason homeopathically potentised – diluted – iodine can remedy the problems caused by elemental iodine. This example illustrates the essence of the homeopathic method, which is founded on the principle "like cures like".
In Margaret’s case the remedy was given not only because it matched her specific symptoms, but also because it fitted her personality. The homeopath noticed the uncharacteristic weight gain and the unusually subdued behaviour for Margaret. She did not display either of these traits in a healthy state. These two aspects fit the remedy picture of Iodum and it was indeed the right remedy for Margaret.
However, Margaret had a colleague who needed a completely different homeopathic remedy for her thyroid problem. An important remedy for nodules in the thyroid that occur with either an under- or overactive thyroid is Sepia. Here too the choice of the right remedy depends on the personality of the person affected. In the young colleague’s case, for example, the thyroid complaints appeared after the birth of her baby. This fact must be taken into account when looking at the totality of the symptoms. The young colleague also suffered weight gain, which, however, was accompanied by mood swings and insomnia. Margaret’s hormones were no longer those of a young mother, and Sepia would not have helped in her case.
Thyroid problems in men
Even in a man with hypo‑ or hyperthyroidism we must consider the individual symptoms, although they are weighted differently. The symptom picture might include, for example, chronic sweating of the head, stubborn weight gain (the "flabby" type), or a generally weak and sluggish constitution. Anxiety and a feeling of being overwhelmed by a great responsibility may also occur. These symptoms lead us directly to Calcarea carbonica, a homeopathic remedy known for exactly these features. Homeopathy is person‑specific, not disease‑specific, and anything else would be a mediocre, one‑size‑fits‑all treatment. In our pursuit of true, authentic health that is out of the question.
