Let's continue working on our homoeopathic home medicine cabinet today. Although you can hardly call it real work. Many people take great pleasure in collecting the ingenious masterpieces we call homoeopathic remedies and assembling a cabinet for personal use. It gives not only mothers a feeling of order and preparedness. Besides, it's simply great fun!
Urtica urens – the small nettle
I want to take a closer look at the remedy Urtica urens. To help you memorise the homoeopathic remedy picture of Urtica urens, I'd like to remind you of the source substance used to make the remedy: the nettle.

Have you ever come into contact with a nettle? Contact usually causes a red, itchy rash with swelling, irritated skin and occasionally even blisters. So if the symptoms you observe include hives or a stinging sensation, it's worth thinking of this versatile remedy.
A versatile home remedy
The first part of the name may sound familiar? Yes, the root also appears in Urticaria – a skin rash with raised red welts. (I've discussed this in more detail in my post Urticaria – Apis or Urtica urens).
We have talked about its effectiveness for heat rash or hot flushes (see When the summer heat gets under the skin).
Urtica urens is also a good choice for sunburn that stings and prickles, as we saw in Sunburn and fluid depletion.
In addition, you can consider Urtica urens for other burns as well – not just sunburn. It has been shown that chemical burns respond well to taking Urtica urens 30.
Individual dosing
Depending on the severity of the burns, you can use this homoeopathic remedy as often as necessary. For example, if the burns are only mild, you might only need the remedy every few hours or twice daily. However, if the burns are very serious and you are on the way to A&E, you might take Urtica urens every few minutes!
But today let's talk about shellfish. Since we want to include Urtica urens in our well-stocked home medicine cabinet, I'd like to tell you about a situation in which this remedy was able to soften an allergic reaction to shellfish.
Urtica urens for allergic reactions
Doug, a family friend, always managed his shellfish allergy very conscientiously. He consistently avoided the various triggers like crab, lobster, prawns – you know, the usual suspects. So before ordering a soup in a highly praised new restaurant, he warned the waiter that he couldn't eat shellfish.
The waiter assured him the soup contained no shellfish. But almost immediately after he took the first few spoonfuls of the absolutely delicious soup, Doug knew he was in trouble.
You should know: Doug is a dentist. He knows his way around the mouth. When his tongue and lips immediately swelled and started to burn, he knew he had come into contact with his worst arch-enemies – shellfish.
In hindsight the waiter was right when he said the soup contained no shellfish. He couldn't have known that the stock used to cook the soup was based on shellfish. The stock was a classic bouillabaisse made with crab shells.
Yuck!
Acting quickly pays off
But fortunately Doug knew what to do. He immediately took Urtica urens 30, every few minutes. Gradually the swelling and stinging eased and Doug's allergic reaction fortunately did not progress to anaphylactic shock. In fact Doug didn't even have to go to hospital, as would normally have been the case. He was able to get the situation under control himself – right there in the restaurant. He owed this freedom in health to homoeopathy.
Is there anything more inspiring than a true story of homoeopathic success like this? I don't think so!
H for home medicine cabinet and homoeopathy
My dear readers – with the accumulated knowledge from my blog posts and your own homoeopathic home medicine cabinet you will be able to enjoy the same freedom in health as our friend Doug. Being prepared is half the battle. When the tongue is already swelling and burning, it's too late to quickly learn the relevant remedy profiles and order the remedies.
Had Doug not known about the effectiveness of Urtica urens, his pleasant evening might have ended with a visit to hospital. Instead he was able to avert the crisis and spread the good news about homoeopathy!
By the way: Further information on dosage and potency of the remedy can be found here.
Homoeopathy helps – spread the word!
Warmly,
Yours
