Tonsil stones – Hepar sulphuris as a suitable homoeopathic remedy

[Text in the image: You really should turn over every stone (when it comes to tonsil stones)]

I have received a number of requests to write a post about tonsil stones. To be honest, I wasn’t sure whether this topic would be timely or interesting enough for my readers.

There are people who are prone to tonsil stones and people who are not.

Those who are prone to them often suffer from recurrent tonsillitis, which of course is then treated accordingly with antibiotics. This fact alone prompts me to ask the question: Could tonsil stones be an iatrogenic condition? In other words, could common medications (especially antibiotics, which are often prescribed for throat infections) increase susceptibility to tonsil stones or even cause them?

I’m not saying this must be the case. I don’t know. But it’s an interesting question to consider. I recall an instructive quote from Dr William Osler:

“The person who takes a drug must recover twice, once from the disease and once from the medicine.”

Before you dismiss this quote as the ramblings of an obscure eccentric, consider that Dr Osler was one of the founding fathers of the Johns Hopkins Hospital! It’s hard to imagine a more conventional source to draw attention to this consequential principle.

Note these lines, dear readers, and do so in a way that you can read them again and again. This message is that important to me.

Whether tonsil stones are iatrogenic or simply “bad luck” remains to be seen. In any case, they form from calcifying bacteria and deposits in the crevices of the tonsils.

Hepar sulphuris as a healing remedy

In homeopathy it is often not necessary to determine the exact cause. For tonsil stones (often accompanied by throat or ear pain and bad breath) Hepar sulphuris calcareum (also called Hepar sulph or Hepar sulf) is generally given in the 30th potency twice daily until the stones have gone. Please note that it can take some time for the homeopathic remedy to take effect. Further information on dosing and potency of the remedy can be found here: https://www.narayana-verlag.de/spektrum-homoeopathie/d-oder-c-potenz-das-ist-hier-die-frage.

I know it sounds a little vague, and that is not my intention. It’s just that sometimes it can take months for the symptoms to disappear. For those affected, it is important to observe the healing process over a longer period to be sure they have chosen the right remedy. As long as we can see an improvement in one of the three “wonderful markers”, we know we are on the right path.

Signposts on the road to recovery

What exactly are these three wonderful markers? To put it briefly:

Marker No. 1: After taking the remedy the symptoms occur with reduced intensity. In other words, what began as an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10 comes down to a 6, then a 4, and so on.

Marker No. 2: The duration of the symptoms becomes shorter. For example, if vomiting is the problem, the episodes no longer last as long. Even if the person still needs to vomit for a few days, the actual time during which they suffer is shortened.

Marker No. 3: The third and final wonderful marker is longer intervals between episodes. If someone initially vomits every hour, it is clearly an improvement if, after taking the remedy, they only vomit every three hours.

With tonsil stones we would look for them to become smaller, less hard, or simply easier to dislodge. Once we see movement in that direction, we can be confident we have found the right homeopathic remedy and continue treatment until we feel much better. I usually find that the condition disappears completely over time.

Once an improvement is evident, even if only slight, give the remedy the time it needs to reach its full effect. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

If someone is considering a tonsillectomy — or, as I like to call it, using a cannon to kill a sparrow — then I recommend reading my blog post I want my body parts back.

Homeopathy helps – spread the word!

Yours,
