Did you know that the human body consists of about 60 percent water?
An astonishing fact, isn't it?
Have you ever thought about how our body manages to distribute all that water evenly? Why it doesn't slosh back and forth when we run, why we don't dry out or simply burst?
Of course, it's down to salt!
While there are many different salts in our body, sodium chloride is one of the most important (it makes up roughly 0.4 percent of our body, about the same as the salt concentration of seawater).
If the delicate balance between water and salt is disturbed, this has serious consequences for our health – not only physically but also emotionally.
That's why I want to write here about Natrium muriaticum, commonly known as ordinary table salt.
Nat mur plays an important role in regulating our bodily fluids and the key word here is balance.
Nat mur ensures that there is neither too little nor too much fluid in the body and covers both ends of the spectrum. That means it acts as a regulator for all symptoms related to our fluid balance, whether they involve excess or deficiency. Nat mur can, for example, be indicated for both dry and watery (excessive tearing) eyes. Likewise, it covers a craving for salty foods as well as an aversion to salt.
It works for constipation (not enough fluid) just as it does for diarrhoea (too much fluid). A person who needs Nat mur may be low-spirited or depressed and prone to weakness because they lack the vital salt.
In my family there was once the case of an elderly man who suddenly felt so weak that he could not even open his eyes. He feared the worst and thought he was having a stroke! His son rang me straight away, not knowing that I was stuck in traffic in Calcutta at the time!
I gave him the advice I learned for these cases from Dr Pratip Banerji: dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water and sip it slowly. Since I was on the other side of the world, I could of course not rule out low blood sugar and therefore advised dissolving a teaspoon of sugar in the glass of water in addition to the salt.
My relative began taking it immediately and I could hear on the phone that within minutes he was back to his old self. Interestingly, my relative had just been discharged from hospital, where he had repeatedly experienced episodes of weakness.
But even a full blood count had found nothing remarkable (To be honest: Sometimes I think these blood tests are not as accurate as claimed! Far too often I find that the error rate is quite high. Often lab values are considered more important than the symptoms one hears, feels and sees – or doesn't, which can also be important in a medical history. This can, of course, lead to the patient being treated incorrectly or not at all. I believe we should treat the person, not the lab results.)
Now back to our case: the episodes of weakness recurred from time to time, but never nearly as severely as before. How did that happen? First, my relative continued to take the saltwater solution daily, seasoned to taste with salt, like a good broth. Second, we prescribed Nat mur D6, taken twice daily, to help regulate his salt balance. It wasn't long before he could stop the salt solution and rely entirely on Nat mur D6.
Nat mur is nature's great water regulator, whether there is too little or too much water. And what could be nicer than encouraging your own body to heal itself?
Spread the word!
