The Emergency Series: If only I'd known...

News

Sometimes what we don't know can hurt us….

…and days later!

Many years ago my parents were involved in a minor car accident. There seemed to be no damage other than to the cars. Immediately after the accident they both insisted they were fine and that nothing had happened.

Three days later it looked very different, because they could hardly move due to whiplash and felt stiff all over!

Perhaps you've experienced something similar after an accident: you think you've escaped with a fright, but after three to five days a whiplash makes itself known. Out of the blue you writhe in pain and regret not having recognised the injury immediately after the accident and reported it to your insurer. Then the cost is twice as high!

You are not alone; many people find themselves in this situation. That's why I think it's important to mention at this point a homeopathic remedy that is not necessarily known as an emergency remedy and which under normal circumstances is not taken immediately following an injury or accident.

Let me call it "Delayed First Aid".

Back to my parents' accident: when terrible neck pain, stiffness and headaches set in a few days after the event, I advised them to take Rhus tox.C200 two to three times daily (as soon as the symptoms improved they took the remedy at longer intervals and eventually stopped altogether). And as is often the case with homeopathy, this treatment was a great success.

I know what you're thinking now! You're wondering whether you should take the remedy prophylactically right after the accident and spare yourself the pain from the outset!

A clear "No". I wouldn't do that. It's not necessarily wrong, but personally I wouldn't do it that way.

As a rule, homeopathy is used as a medicine to get to the root of an illness and to heal it. As long as you do not have an illness (in this case no symptoms of whiplash), there is no reason to take the remedy.

Think about it for a moment: in this respect homeopathy is very similar to conventional medicine. No one would think of taking aspirin if they didn't have a headache! So why take a homeopathic remedy when there is no reason to do so? You only take Rhus tox.C200 when symptoms of whiplash appear.

For very severe pain you can additionally take Arnica alternately with Rhus tox. (I've written about that elsewhere).

If the accident has caused you great shock, please also consider the first-aid remedy par excellence: Aconitum.

In the meantime: drive carefully, obey the traffic rules, look over your shoulder and keep Rhus tox.C200 to hand in case another driver is not as considerate as you.

Pass it on!
