Last week I wrote about my experiences as the mother of two very active boys and how crazy every single day used to be. There was practically one emergency after another.

As promised, this week I begin my series on homeopathic first aid. From now on you can simply do a quick search on my blog in an emergency and use the right remedy from your home first-aid kit.

The manufacturers of these remedies can look back on over 100 years of experience in this field and know very well which remedies are most often indicated in an emergency. That is why most pharmacies have put together appropriate emergency kits that supply you with everything you will need in these situations. If you have such a kit at home, you can confidently say that you are prepared for all eventualities and can apply your knowledge with confidence and competence.

The homeopathic emergency kit is a reliable companion for all of life’s situations: before, during and after birth, for children of every age, injuries, menarche, and so on.Praxisleitfaden-Homoeopathie-Margaret-Lucy-Tyler.12926.jpg

It helps in every case, whether a small child falls off a bicycle or a very elderly neighbour suffers a stroke. But what is really interesting about homeopathy is that we can support all age groups very well with our remedies and do not need a large medicine cabinet at home. A 90-year-old man who slips in the shower and falls will probably need the same remedy as a 12-year-old boy who falls out of a tree.

Have you guessed which remedies I mean? Yes, of course! They are Aconitum, Arnica and perhaps Hypericum for the pain (depending on the circumstances).

And that brings us to the first remedy in my first-aid series. My number one and the remedy that must be in every emergency kit is Aconitum napellus (commonly: aconite).

Interestingly, I have often been asked what I carry around in my handbag and I even devoted a whole Facebook post to the subject. Well, the answer is lipstick, a handkerchief (really ironed by hand!), my purse, glasses, keys, phone and... you guessed it... Aconitum C200!!

I always carry my Aconitum with me!

Why? Because Aconitum is the emergency remedy for shock. We never know when we will be faced with a fright or shock, so it’s good to be prepared. You should therefore always have Aconitum at hand.

It is true, of course, that this remedy is sometimes only used days after the actual accident or shocking event, because the physical or emotional consequences then become apparent. One example would be a traumatic event after which you only realise a few days later that you cannot sleep well at all—the sleep disturbances creep in, so to speak. Then Aconitum might be indicated and could be taken once or twice a day.

Most of the time, however, Aconitum is taken immediately after a trauma: immediately after an earthquake, a car accident, or if you are stuck in a lift for hours. This remedy is indicated when an event or pathology has not yet become established and is developing into a long-term problem – the experience is still fresh, new and acute. That does not mean that Aconitum cannot also be given long after a traumatic event if that event has caused certain complaints.

In acute emergencies Aconitum C200 is taken as needed, usually first every four hours and then, as symptoms improve, at longer intervals.

Aconitum stops the uncontrollable, anxious trembling that occurs immediately after the trauma and brings the affected person back to themselves.

As already mentioned, many of our homeopathic remedies can help at any age, whether young or old, and Aconitum is such a remedy.

A very elderly relative of mine was recently in hospital and absolutely convinced he was having a heart attack. He looked at me and kept saying to me, “I’m dying, Joette, I’m dying.” I saw the fear in his eyes and immediately gave him Aconitum C200. Within minutes his anxiety had gone and he was even able to joke again with the nurse who was checking on him. That is how fast the remedy acted! You must not assume that homeopathics always heal so quickly, but it is a reason to be grateful for the remedies available to us.

Aconitum C200 was also the remedy of choice when one of my adventurous sons fell out of a tree – and it was a sizable tree! Aconitum was perfect for the initial shock, which subsided immediately, and I could calmly check whether he had any further injuries (broken bones, head injuries or bruises). Important: You must learn to observe carefully. After traumatic events always watch for symptoms that appear and give the corresponding homeopathic remedies.

The more you hone your powers of observation, the more quickly you will know which remedy to give in which situation. In addition, you should acquire a basic knowledge of homeopathic remedies.

Any of us can get into an emergency; unfortunately no one is immune. But the shock after an unexpected accident or event can be quickly and effectively relieved with Aconitum and can help the person cope better with the situation.

Tell your friends! The more people know, the better!
