Natural Birth Part 1: Turning a Breech Presentation

News

It was the best of times and the worst of times.

Hmmm … that first sentence is, as far as I know, already taken, so I’ll need to be more specific.

Childbirth is one of the most magical — but also one of the most stressful — times in a woman’s life. Our bodies change by the minute and any unusual pain or the smallest delay can send even the most composed of us into a panic.

But women have always been there for one another. There are women who support and inform others during this time about what to expect as the day of delivery approaches.

There are also women who went a step further — pioneers in the field of midwifery who have helped many women have easier births.

One of these women is Dr Mercy B. Jackson (1802–1877). In my Mother’s Day blog I wrote about notable women in homeopathy and Dr Jackson was one of them. A mother of eleven herself, Dr Jackson naturally had a great interest in gynaecology and obstetrics.

One of her greatest discoveries was Pulsatilla as an aid to childbirth. Dr Jackson found that this remedy can turn breech babies and correct delays during labour.

Without this discovery there would have been many unnecessary surgical interventions in delivery rooms. I have seen the wonderful effect of this remedy with my own eyes and can attest that it works.

Pulsatilla is a uniquely feminine remedy. As such it helps with a variety of physical complaints that can occur during pregnancy, such as urinary infections and digestive problems.

It also helps in highly emotional times, especially with tearfulness (or, as I like to call it, when you feel emotionally like mush). It is also indicated for a long labour.

When taken daily in the last four weeks of an otherwise unremarkable pregnancy, it prepares the mother for delivery and shortens the birth.

One of the most remarkable indications for Pulsatilla (a discovery of Dr Jackson) is a breech presentation. I can think of no better example than that of my colleague Carrie. Here she tells her story in her own words:

Two years ago I was preparing for the birth of my third child.Das-grosse-Homoeopathiebuch-fuer-Schwangerschaft-Geburt-und-Stillzeit-Sandra-Perko.09751.jpg

My first two children were born at home without complications and I planned another home birth with the same midwife for my third.

In the four weeks before the birth I made all the preparations: I got a birthing pool in good time, practised hypnosis exercises and ordered all the homeopathic remedies I might need during labour.

At 35 weeks, however, my midwife discovered that my baby had not turned.

That threw my plans completely off course, because I was told I couldn’t have a home birth if the baby didn’t turn in time.

I had always been a conscientious student and I tried, using the exercises I found on the internet, to turn my baby. Every day I literally stood on my head.

But the only thing that turned during that time was my head!

After a week my baby was still breech and I was getting nervous. At that point Joette gave me a tip.

Midwives and expectant parents, take note: Pulsatilla 200, taken twice daily.

That’s it.

So does that mean I can skip those uncomfortable and unpleasant exercises?

Yes!

This is something I notice again and again about homeopathy: it’s very simple.

And what about baby number three? I gave birth at home, in the birthing pool as planned. I’m actually fairly sure he turned after the second dose of Pulsatilla. I felt it.

It’s certainly a good reason to have Pulsatilla in the house during pregnancy.

For all midwives and expectant parents, here are two more posts on natural birth. In the next blog I will write about the birth remedy ‘Number 1’. You should have this remedy in several potencies on hand for the birth.

For ourselves (and all who need us) we should look after and protect our bodies.

This is homeopathy in practice: proven and reproducible — effective protocols specifically for us women.
