Hot in here, isn't it? Sulphur and hot flushes

Hot in here, isn't it?

How often do women going through the menopause check whether the air-conditioning is set correctly, only to find it's not the room that's hot but themselves? Very often!

Hot flushes can not only be unpleasant and annoying, but can practically bring us to a standstill! (Dear men, please don't look away now! There are interesting tidbits for you in this blog post too!)

Today I want to talk about another indispensable homeopathic remedy for the medicine cabinet that helps not only with hot flushes but also with numerous other complaints, namely Sulphur.

Sulphur, the great polycrestHomöopathie für die Wechseljahre Evelyne Majer-Julian

Sulphur occupies an important place in the materia medica because there are so many possible applications for this remedy. It is a good remedy for skin eruptions, especially when several remedies have already been tried and nothing has really helped.

Sulphur 30 may be suitable for anyone who has an unusually bad body odour — even animals. For example, I successfully gave Sulphur to a poorly, smelly cat called Carmelina, who was adopted by my family in 2012.

Sulphur can also be a good choice for people who are pathologically untidy, particularly when they suddenly start attending to their toileting needs in completely inappropriate places. (Read more about this in my blog post Ein Schweineleben)

Certain gastrointestinal complaints can also be alleviated with a dose of this remedy. Furthermore, Sulphur is my personal secret tip for stubborn colds and flu. The depth and broad spectrum of action of homeopathic remedies is astonishing. But that you already know.

Even for hot flushes we have several options to choose from. There are Glonoinum and Lachesis muta, to name just two. But let's return to our remedy of the day.

Key symptoms

The key symptoms of Sulphur are "hot and foul-smelling", which makes sense when you consider the substance from which homeopathic Sulphur is obtained. So how best to remember this? Well, with the head of an ordinary match (which contains sulphur). The sulphurous smell, heat and burning irritability of the match head are all characteristics that sulphur also possesses as a potentised homeopathic remedy.

In keeping with these key symptoms, Sulphur 30 has proven to be a good remedy for hot flushes, particularly when sufferers smell unpleasant on the body, in the hair or on the breath. The foul odour need not necessarily be present, but if it is, we know we're on the right track with our remedy choice.

For hot flushes, Sulphur 30 is usually taken twice daily until a clear improvement occurs. As always — if no improvement occurs — stop taking it and consider another remedy. Further information on dosing and potency of the remedy can be found here.

Initial aggravation – does that have to happen?Handbuch der homöopathischen Arzneimittellehre William Boericke

You know, sometimes people know just enough to be dangerous, yet they usually pretend to be experts in the field. A typical example is this: many people believe that things must get worse before they get better. To some extent that is true, and one can infer that this also applies to classical homoeopathy. In classical homoeopathy it is often said that an aggravation (or a marked worsening of symptoms) indicates that a remedy was well chosen.

Then there is the so‑called Herxheimer reaction. Here a worsening of the condition (particularly with skin diseases) is regarded as a positive development, because it means it is on the way to improvement. The body is detoxifying and cleansing itself of toxins. This attitude is especially found within the naturopathic paradigm. I'm not saying that therapists who think this way are wrong; I'm just saying that this is not the view in Practical Homoeopathy®. The principle here is that if no improvement occurs, possibly the wrong remedy was chosen.

The severity of the complaints counts

But it always depends on the degree of the complaints. If a patient has a skin condition, it's one thing if one or two spots appear here and there. It's quite another to have a rash all over the body that itches so badly it drives you mad.

Yet many people confuse these two paradigms by insisting that a condition must worsen before it can improve. What are they really trying to say? "That's just the way it is, you have to put up with it." That's the message.

No, no and no again. In Practical Homoeopathy® the rule is: if after an appropriate period there is no improvement, or if the condition worsens significantly, we have probably chosen the wrong remedy and should discontinue it.

And while we're on the subject of "degree", let me add this: an occasional hot flush is not an illness that must be treated. Instead we should simply ride the wave. It means we are entering the next phase in this wonderful life that God has created.

However, if the hot flushes become so severe that we can no longer fulfil our daily duties or they sabotage our sleep, we can respond appropriately and moderately with homeopathic remedies.

Again, it's all a matter of degree.

I've been where you are now. I've followed diets and taken supplements, essential oils and herbs, but nothing — absolutely nothing — ever came close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients and I have achieved with homoeopathy.

Homoeopathy helps — spread the word!

Warmly (but not overheated, thanks to Sulphur 30),

Yours
