Homeopathy for shock and burns

News

I look forward to the day when every household will have a homeopathic first-aid kit that is used as a matter of course in acute situations. I have already written on my blog about treating simple injuries such as sprains and bruises. Today I would like to introduce you to further homeopathic remedies that everyone should know.

Aconitum: The homeopathic remedy par excellence for states of shock

Aconitum napellus (also called aconite or blue monkshood) is the remedy of first choice for shock states, whatever the cause. Most people who are in an acute state of shock will show a positive response to this remedy.

To describe a classic Aconitum state I like to speak of a rapid, violent shock.

When the symptoms come on quickly, suddenly and with great intensity, Aconitum is the indicated remedy. It is appropriate not only for fevers that rise very rapidly within a short time, but also for shock states caused by injuries (especially to the eye). It makes no difference whether the shock is caused by an electric shock, a surgical procedure, a strong blast of cold wind or the experience of a dreadful accident or catastrophe.

Aconitum also relieves anxiety states accompanied by intense panic. The affected person feels mortal fear, is afraid of the dark and believes something terrible is about to happen. These emotions can also be triggered when someone becomes seriously ill within a very short time, e.g. as a result of an accident or a rapidly developing febrile illness.

Characteristic symptoms that point to Aconitum as the indicated remedy include anxiety with fear of death, restlessness and a flushed face. The restlessness often leads to sleep problems and a subjective feeling of palpitations.

Any anxiety state that occurs following an accident or a terrible event is reason enough to take Aconitum.

Even rather 'ordinary' fears, such as fear of flying, fear of earthquakes, crowds, fear of heart failure or claustrophobia, respond to this remedy.

Aconitum is an important remedy for the early stage of pneumonia and can prevent a severe pneumonia if given within the first 24–48 hours after the first symptoms appear. I have many times witnessed the wonderful effect of this remedy in my own family. Many patients and students report the same.

Aconitum is also indicated for panic attacks, extreme exposure to cold and even life-threatening conditions such as severe electric shocks or impending suffocation. Carbon monoxide poisoning is among the conditions treated with Aconitum.

After the terrible events of 11 September 2009 I received countless reports from my New York patients who had taken Aconitum 200 for several weeks after the attack and told me of the beneficial effect of the remedy. In those dreadful times it helped them to remain calm, not to panic and thus to be able to help others.

One such call came from the wife of a fireman who had lost many of his comrades on that tragic day. He was in shock and was unable to function for several days – until he took Aconitum. Afterwards he recovered from the shock and was fit for duty again.

Many years ago a young woman consulted me who had been the victim of a violent crime. The incident had taken place months earlier, but since then the patient had been plagued by panic attacks, could not sleep and had difficulty concentrating. I gave her Aconitum to take for a few days. The patient slept immediately better and after a repeated dose two weeks later the panic attacks also disappeared.

Please remember: For sudden complaints and states of shock you should definitely think of Aconitum napellus, C30 or C200. Carry the remedy with you if possible. That way you are prepared for emergencies.

Cantharis: The best remedy for burns

Cantharis is one of the best remedies for burns of any kind. It does not matter whether the burn is from an electric shock, a sunburn, chemicals, heat or hot water. Cantharis helps the tissue to heal more quickly, relieves pain and swelling and reduces the risk of infection.

For a first-degree burn I always advise my students to begin treatment with Aconitum to counteract the shock and ease the initial pain. The remedy should be given every 15 minutes and discontinued after no more than 6 consecutive doses.

Then give Cantharis C200 to treat the burn itself.

Cantharis can also be given alternately with Aconitum. In other words: on the hour give Aconitum and on the half hour Cantharis – always alternating. Under some circumstances you may need to give the remedy several times in succession, but a clear improvement in symptoms should be visible within a short time.

For second- and third-degree burns Cantharis C200 can be used alongside conventional treatment. Seek a doctor immediately and give Cantharis on the way there. You can administer the remedy every 30 minutes until the pain lessens, after which it should be given at longer intervals.

The more serious and severe the injury, the longer the homeopathic remedy will need to be taken. This may in some cases mean several days or even weeks.

Please remember: For burns you should think of Cantharis C200.

You now have a simple but effective guide to act competently in acute situations. Make use of homeopathy and you will be able to help many people in your family and circle of friends. Imagine being in a world without hospitals, doctors' surgeries and medicines – would you be able to treat injuries, infections and epidemics? Take your fate into your own hands and use the healing powers of homeopathy!
