Diastasis recti: the separation of the abdominal muscles

News

Pregnancy brings major changes to a woman's body – some beautiful, which everyone welcomes, but also some we like less.

Diastasis recti – in which a gap develops in the muscles of the abdominal wall – occurs relatively frequently during or after pregnancy. Some estimates suggest that up to 60 per cent of new mothers suffer from this complication.

The diastasis can present as a pronounced gap between the abdominal muscles or as a soft bulge at a small, localized area of the abdomen where part of the muscle has become lax.

May I introduce you to Barbara?

She is the mother of three small children and has just given birth to her fourth baby. After the birth she noticed a sharp, burning pain in her lower back and her abdomen also looked somehow different.

While the gap itself is usually painless, diastasis recti often causes lower back pain, a burning sensation in the pelvic area or hip pain. In addition, posture is negatively affected and it is not uncommon for it to be accompanied by urinary incontinence or digestive problems.

During Barbara's third pregnancy there had been initial signs of diastasis recti, but the fourth birth brought it out in full. Worried about her condition, Barbara called me immediately after the birth.

“What am I to do, Joette? My belly looks so dented and strange, and my back pain is awful – it really burns there. I can just about lift the baby, but I can't carry my other two little ones. I'm doing my best to resume normal life, but my belly feels like it doesn't belong to me. Can you please help me?”

I recommended a combination of various homeopathic remedies. It is not a Banerji protocol, but it has proven effective in my practice over many years: Symphytum officinale 200, Ruta graveolens 30 and Calcium fluoratum 12, each to be taken twice daily – but please separately, not all together. The remedies should be taken until the symptoms have noticeably improved.

Barbara and I met for a follow-up appointment two months later. She could not tell me exactly when the diastasis had resolved, but after eight weeks the bulges were no longer visible. Her abdomen looked completely normal again and the lower back pain was much improved.

Homeopathy works!

Many believe that diastasis recti can only be healed with muscle exercises. In my experience, homeopathic remedies can also have a strengthening effect, with Calcium fluoratum in particular deserving mention.

In rare cases an untreated diastasis recti can lead to an inguinal hernia (in which the internal organs push through the abdominal wall). That is a completely different story and requires a different treatment approach, about which I have already written here.

Diastasis recti in men

This series focuses on mothers. I would, however, like to note that men can also be affected by diastasis recti, especially if they lift weights that are too heavy for their muscle strength. The homeopathic treatment protocol remains the same: Symphytum 200, Ruta 30 and Calc fluor 12, each taken twice daily and separately, until the symptoms improve.

With warmest regards,

Yours,
