"I thought you had to have an inguinal hernia operated on! Are you telling me that your hernia is gone because you took homeopathic remedies?"
Marcus was far from convinced.
But in fact his squash partner David was feeling much better and he had to admit that the lump had disappeared. Only the week before their squash match had been cancelled for exactly that reason.
Even David's doctor, after some hesitation, had to admit that the hernia was no longer there.
A few months before the inguinal hernia, David had suffered a torn meniscus and after the operation he had suffered badly from nausea and headaches. When he noticed the inguinal hernia, he wanted an alternative treatment option.
His wife had been taking the children to a homeopath for years. David was sceptical that it would help him, but he wanted to give it a try at least once.
Treating hernias without side effects
The homeopath explained that she had treated many hernias and that there were inguinal hernias which disappeared very quickly after the administration of a homeopathic remedy. Sometimes homeopathy can only relieve the pain and not the hernia itself. David's hernia was not painful, which she saw as a good sign.
She also reassured him that there would be no interactions between the homeopathic remedies and the blood-pressure medication David had to take. In addition, the remedies were not expensive; a pack usually cost no more than ten euros. David could hardly believe his ears — it seemed too good to be true.
The homeopath prescribed the remedy Lycopodium, but also said that it might not be the only remedy and that there could be a follow-up remedy.
Bloating as an accompanying symptom
One of the reasons for her choice was the bloating that David suffered every time he ate something rich.
He asked whether this problem would also settle. The homeopath told him that these complaints would probably be the first to disappear.
"If that's the case, then I can easily understand why my wife and children were so insistent that I come to see you," David replied.
The day after taking the remedy, David's mother served homemade strawberry ice cream (his favourite flavour) and despite a generous helping he had no digestive troubles whatsoever.
In fact it didn't stop at one scoop of ice cream; David helped himself to a second and — quite stealthily — a third portion. The digestive troubles still did not appear. Half-heartedly, David thought he could be satisfied with this effect of the remedy alone.
A few days after this ice-cream binge David noticed that his hernia had improved. A week later it had completely disappeared! How could that be?
David didn't really mind in principle — the main thing was that any additional surgery was off the table.
Homeopathy enjoys a worldwide reputation for treating conditions gently, safely and cost-effectively, conditions for which a surgical intervention is usually recommended.
Homeopathy is the medicine of the future and has won another enthusiastic supporter in David. Not to mention his squash partner.
