In two case reports of adolescents the typical vital sensation of the Piperaceae becomes apparent with its polarity between boredom, listlessness, pain and pleasure, amusement and variety. The Lamiaceae, by contrast, seek more sensual arousal and tend towards addiction, as a case example shows. A comparison of the two plant families from the perspective of plant evolution makes the differences in vital sensation easier to understand.
