The case report of a patient with sleep disorders illustrates the flip side and the extent of the fall of the passion and zest for life typical of the Lamiaceae. In illness the high energy level may be contrasted by depressive exhaustion. With Scutellaria lateriflora the state of exhaustion is particularly pronounced, with the feeling of being completely drained and lifeless. Triggers for this can be overwork or a prolonged illness, particularly influenza. This is accompanied by pronounced, very deep-seated nervous tension that may reach back into childhood as a result of a difficult family background.
