Complex for thyroid function with KSM-66®
The Thyroid* Complex from Unimedica is a harmoniously balanced premium complex to support thyroid function. Each single ingredient in the Thyroid* Complex was selected for its specific role in supporting a normal metabolism. The thyroid is the control centre of metabolism.
Whether it is iodine from organic brown seaweed, which contributes to the production of thyroid hormones, or selenium — each element helps in its own way to support the body's normal functioning and, specifically, the thyroid naturally.
The carefully selected nutrients — organic brown seaweed, ashwagandha extract (KSM-66®), L-tyrosine, selenium, manganese, zinc, vitamin A (retinol) and vitamin D (cholecalciferol) — have been combined into a potent and effective formula tailored to the specific needs of the thyroid.
With ingredients of the highest quality and the potency of nature
Brown seaweed (bladderwrack) is a natural source of iodine. Adequate iodine intake is crucial for optimal thyroid function. These marine plants grow in cool oceans and also contain many other minerals in their natural, synergistic matrix, allowing the natural iodine to exert its full effect.
L-tyrosine is an important amino acid for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Trace elements such as selenium, manganese and zinc complement the complex through their essential roles in metabolism and the immune system, with selenium in particular contributing to normal thyroid function. Vitamins A (retinol) and D3 (cholecalciferol) further support thyroid function both directly and indirectly, for example through their influence on the immune system.
With KSM-66 Ashwagandha®, the highest quality, highest active-ingredient ashwagandha extract
The Thyroid* Complex from Unimedica uses the currently best branded raw material KSM-66 Ashwagandha®, which meets the highest standards. Only the roots of the ashwagandha plant are used, as only they have so far been confirmed for safe and effective internal use.
Ashwagandha, also known as “sleep berry” or “Indian ginseng”, is a plant that plays a central role in the traditional Indian healing system Ayurveda. The plant's active compound complex contains so-called withanolides. Each capsule of the highly concentrated Thyroid* Complex from Unimedica contains 7.5 mg of withanolides (5% of the ashwagandha extract).
KSM-66 Ashwagandha® is a full-spectrum extract, which means it contains all the constituents of the root and thus all the natural active compounds in the composition as nature intended. It has the highest concentration among the major pure ashwagandha root extracts available today. It is produced using a special process developed by KSM-66 over 14 years that employs “green chemistry”, meaning no harmful chemicals or alcohol are used in production. For the vegan variant used here, it was also possible to forgo the traditional pre-treatment with milk — which dissolves both water- and fat-soluble plant constituents — while still retaining the high active-ingredient concentration.
How the ingredients of the Thyroid* Complex exert their effects
Each ingredient in the Thyroid* Complex fulfils a specific role. Bladderwrack provides natural iodine, which is required for the formation of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). L-tyrosine is an amino acid and, as a protein building block, is involved in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Selenium contributes to normal thyroid function and, like manganese and zinc, contributes to metabolism in various ways.
Vitamin D is known for its ability to regulate the immune system and to respond to inflammation. This is particularly important when dealing with autoimmune conditions (which can also affect the thyroid when the immune system wrongly attacks the gland).
Vitamin A is essential for cell growth and differentiation, including the cells of the thyroid. It influences the amount of T3 (triiodothyronine), an active thyroid hormone produced by the body. Vitamin A also supports the body's ability to utilise thyroid hormones. A deficiency in vitamin A can lead to the body being unable to use thyroid hormones effectively, which can throw thyroid function out of balance.
Why does the thyroid play such an important role?
The thyroid is located just below the larynx and acts like a protective shield in front of the trachea. It is the source of two essential hormones, scientifically known as triiodothyronine and thyroxine. These two hormonal messengers are tasked with stimulating the energy use of every single cell — they are the conductors that switch the general metabolism into high gear or economy mode. To fulfil their function they circulate in the bloodstream and then bind to receptors in cell nuclei and mitochondria, the energy-producing units within cells.
If there are disturbances in this process, various symptoms can occur, such as inner restlessness, weight problems or reduced performance.
Which foods support the thyroid?
The selected ingredients are also present in various foods. Iodine is found in sea fish and seafood as well as in various types of seaweed and in iodised table salt; L-tyrosine is found in chicken, turkey, fish and dairy products. Selenium is present in nuts and legumes, manganese in wholegrain products, nuts and seeds, and zinc in meat, eggs and seafood.
Vitamin D3 is found in oily fish, liver and eggs and is produced by the body when exposed to sufficient sunlight. Vitamin A is found in liver, egg yolk, oily fish and fish oils as well as dairy products. Plant sources contain the precursor to vitamin A as beta-carotene in carrots, sweet potatoes, dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach or kale and in orange-red fruits such as peppers, tomatoes or apricots.
However, it can be difficult to obtain sufficient amounts of these nutrients in high quality and concentration from diet alone, which may make use of the Thyroid* Complex sensible.
