Cookbook for endurance athletes
The book's beast of burden is, of course, Shalane Flanagan, world-class marathon runner (personal best time of 2:21.14 at the 2014 Berlin Marathon), four-time Olympian and US record holder in long-distance running. She has been running since childhood and lives in Portland, USA. As a runner who competes against world-class runners, she brings to the book the specific nutrition that is important for running. She attributes her ability to run so tenaciously in competitions to her nutritional intake in particular: she eats food with a high nutrient density at all meals. Hands off empty calories, such as breakfast rolls made from white flour, which have a bad effect on athletes and quickly show up in their performance. Instead: nutritious food throughout the day. Hearty minestrone with sausages and beans, Moroccan lentil salad, roast chicken with herbs, sweet potato breakfast biscuits or, of course, oatmeal muesli in the morning for competition days. A great book for sporty people, not just runners. Also recommended for people who want to change their lifestyle, e.g. lose weight or simply improve their performance in everyday life. But you'll have to swing the wooden spoon.
