Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata) is an extraordinary gift of nature. The resin of the frankincense tree helps the plant to seal injuries on its trunk and branches and heal itself. Fascinated by this property, frankincense has been used in traditional Indian medicine, Ayurveda, for thousands of years. In our culture, burned frankincense is known as a sacred scent.
In addition to numerous essential oils and polysaccharides, frankincense also contains special resin acids known as boswellic acids, which make up 5–8% of the resin. Unimedica's frankincense capsules contain a high-concentration frankincense extract with 85% boswellic acids.
What is frankincense?
The frankincense tree, also known as Salai Guggul, olibanum, or Sallaki, grows in India, the Punjab region extending into Pakistan, as well as in Arabia and the Horn of Africa. The best-known variety is the Indian frankincense Boswellia serrata. The air-dried resin of this plant is used. Usually, the resin is harvested by incising the trunk and branches. The milky fluid that oozes out dries on the tree in the sun.
The quality of the resin improves with each harvest. For this reason, the same incisions are made multiple times. In this way, higher-quality and purer resins can be collected several times per year. However, the trees need several years to rebuild their reserves.

Frankincense has been revered for thousands of years in various cultures. According to legend, the Three Wise Men brought frankincense, along with myrrh and gold, as a gift to the newborn Jesus. But long before that, frankincense was used as an offering to the ancient gods of the East and valued as a medicinal plant.
