Entertaining, beautifully designed, clear, detailed
Beautifully designed, clearly laid out and lovingly written, the author devotes himself to the healing effects of spices in this all-round fantastic book. He leaves virtually no question unanswered. After a brief introduction to the topic (10 pages), 50 native and foreign spices are presented on 400 pages. Well-known herbs such as thyme, caraway and mint stand alongside exotic herbs such as tamarind and asafetida. You can find out all kinds of news and tips on how to use them. The third part, which I find particularly exciting, is about spice blends - the favourite discipline of all curry lovers, but it also presents non-curries, for example a chilli from North Africa, a moist spice blend from Ethiopia, the famous Chinese 5-spice powder, various marinades, mulled wine spice and, in a table, a wide variety of harmonious spice combinations. The third part comprises just under 50 pages. Part 4 is a short guide from A to Z on the healing properties of spices and from part 5 onwards, the detailed and commendably well organised service section of the book begins with a shopping guide, three indexes, bibliography etc. The core section, the presentation of the individual spices, always proceeds in the same way. Firstly, the title reveals the typical characteristics of the spice, e.g. sage: "Better memory and good mood". Then, over two to six pages, there is an entertaining description of what research and experience have discovered about this spice, how it works and what ingredients it contains. Under "Sage from head to toe", the other healing powers of the spice are presented, e.g. with regard to cardiovascular diseases, skin diseases, cancer, diabetes, herpes and stomach ulcers. Then there is an excursion into its historical and culinary uses. Finally, there are shopping tips and recipes. Everything is clearly summarised in a full-page table. Many cross-references, practical tips and compiled research results make this elaborate book a standard work that is a pleasure to use.

Praise for the book authors
I am fascinated by this book. It's crazy how often I read this book. I find the recipes very good, just like the description of the individual spices. The disease index is also very practical. We have a large farm. It also has an amazing effect on animals. Wasabi paste has already helped with diarrhoea and celery seed with gout. For the calves, we simply give them a ground fennel-aniseed-caraway infusion or directly into their feed when they have flatulence. If there had been 10 stars, I would have given it 10.

Super - if it weren't for the downer....
This book fills a gap in my knowledge! To have the individual spices described in terms of their medicinal benefits and to be able to browse through delicious recipes with beautiful, colourful illustrations - a delight and an enrichment of knowledge. If only it hadn't been for the fact that "animal experiments" had to be used on every page before the benefits for humans. This hurts my animal-loving soul, distracts my imagination from the positive information into very dark abysses and thus diminishes my enjoyment of the book.

Healing spices
Finally a book that has a nice selection of spices. For each spice there is a description, information about the active ingredient and one or two recipes for use. It is written in an easily understandable and logical way. I like the mixture of science and cookery book. Just the right book for me.

A wonderful book - excellently done
I bought the book a few days ago after seeing the Inner Evolution Summit post. It's really great. Certainly not everything is good for everyone, it doesn't have to be, but it's an inspiration as to what you can achieve with food and spices and with pleasure. I will certainly try out a few things. The scientific side is also very interesting, even if I have learnt to distrust so-called studies. The pictures are very appealing and the presentation - as usual with Narayana - is solid with a good cover, heavy paper and ribbon marker. It really is a pleasure to pick up the book.

Great
If you want to enrich your cooking with more spices and also want to do something for your health, you shouldn't miss this book. There is something for every taste - whether you are a meat eater or a vegan. For each of the 50 different spices (native or exotic) there is an essay on their origin, healing potential, use in the kitchen, shopping tips, delicious recipes, etc. The subject of spice blends is also addressed here - whether bought ready-made or home-made, with tips on roasting and storage. Finally, the appendix contains a summary of all spices as natural medicines and a guide to shopping. It doesn't get any better than this! In addition to my own copy, I also made a Christmas present out of it.

Cook yourself healthy
When you think of herbal healing powers, the first thing that comes to mind is natural herbs. And rightly so, but the field of natural remedies is much wider. I didn't have spices in mind, at least not at first. And yet everyone knows ginger for colds or aniseed for digestion. This book deals with precisely these spices, many of which have long since found their way into our kitchens. A separate chapter has been dedicated to each spice, which takes a very comprehensive approach. In addition to the ingredients and their effect on the human body, the origin of the spice is also discussed and detailed tips on buying and selecting the spice are given. A colour-coded box makes it easy to assign the spice to its application and gives tips on combining it with other spices and its classic use in the kitchen. I was also very impressed by the understandable and interesting written language. Although a non-fiction book, this work is pleasantly easy to read and fascinates with really impressive information. There are even some recipes for dishes and spice blends in this book, providing inspiration and help for the first use of the spices listed. However, due to my limited prior knowledge, I would also like to talk ONLY about cinnamon. I know that cassia cinnamon can also be harmful to the body. Although the different types of cinnamon are discussed in detail, there is no mention of any harmful effects in the book. Nor does it mention its labour-promoting properties at the end of pregnancy. Why? A brief general note in the book that medical advice should be sought is not enough in this respect. This makes me look at the other chapters a little more critically and I recommend that you always consult other sources in addition to the book. Finally, however, I would like to draw your attention to the very practical guide in the 4th and 5th sections of the book, which lists the appropriate spices and applications according to illness and also provides valuable tips on purchasing high-quality spices. For me, as I said, this book is an extremely interesting work that has actually encouraged me to incorporate more spices into my cooking and has significantly expanded my knowledge in this regard. Nevertheless, I recommend that you check the effects of spices before using them.

All-encompassing
This book explains the spices comprehensively and with many well-founded proofs of their effectiveness. I already knew some things from an Indian cookery course with an Indian. Now I have been able to deepen this knowledge. There are also detailed instructions on how to make your own spice blends. The dry roasting of some spices is also described, which makes them more effective. It wasn't a change for me, we've been cooking with lots of spices for a long time and our boys have grown up with them too, for them German home cooking is rather boringly flavoured. A little curry or garam masala and chilli is part of it.

Exciting compendium
When I started to read the book, initially by topic and subject index, I was both fascinated and overwhelmed by such a variety of natural healing knowledge. But also (as a previously ignorant person), what nature has "naturally" in store. I was already familiar with a few plants, herbs, spices and supplements. But I hadn't realised that there is much more than garlic, curry and the like, including what they are used for/against or to prevent/support. A really great, enriching reference book that also explains well the connections between where, how and when spices are best used. There are also interesting facts about the countries of origin and the plants themselves. Including very tasty recipes. - I am very happy to recommend this comprehensive book to my circle of friends. Because everyone likes delicious food. And if it's also good for your health, great. Also suitable as a special gift. - 5 stars for this informative treasure trove!!!

A wonderful book
No kitchen should be without this book. All the spices are very well described with their effects and how to use them. There are also delicious recipes for each spice. My guests loved the black mango chuthney, for example. The guide to using the spices for illnesses is very helpful.

Simply super
The book is simply great, not only as a reference book for spices, but also as a journey of ideas for culinary experiments. The only fly in the ointment is that some of the spices do not indicate the maximum doses or grammes in which they can be consumed and the dose above which some spices have side effects or are even poisonous. Otherwise highly recommended !!!!!

Combination of biochemistry and ancient knowledge about spices
B. B. Aggarwal has done an excellent job of combining the experiential knowledge of our ancestors in various cultures with today's biochemical knowledge. B. Aggarwal has succeeded brilliantly. Open questions are addressed discursively.
