What is resveratrol?

Resveratrol belongs to the secondary plant compounds of the polyphenol group. It is part of the plant immune system and protects plants from environmental influences, pests and infections. Which foods contain resveratrol?

Resveratrol is found in numerous plants, including grapes, raspberries, mulberries, plums and peanuts. The highest concentration of resveratrol has been found in Japanese knotweed. Dark chocolate and red wine also contain resveratrol.

Japanese knotweed originates from the regions of Japan, China and Korea. It also grows on groundwater‑near gravel and shingle soils in Central Europe. The deciduous plant grows rapidly. Young shoots of knotweed can also be enjoyed as a vegetable. In Japan, the plant is traditionally used as a medicinal tea under the name “Itadori”.
