When green lips delight the active
Green-lipped mussel capsules from Unimedica contain the highly dosed powder from the pure New Zealand green-lipped mussel. The characteristic ingredient of this mussel species, the glycosaminoglycans (GAG), also occurs naturally in our synovial fluid, cartilage and connective tissues. There they provide the necessary moisture. The green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), also called the green-shelled mussel, belongs to the mussel family and is native to New Zealand. It has long been valued by the Māori and used in their traditional healing practices.
GAGs for mobility — no gag!
The mussel with the bright green 'rim' is freeze-dried and transported to Germany. Here it is processed into powder in certified facilities under controlled conditions. The powder is then encapsulated in bovine hard gelatin. In this way the shellfish's diverse constituents are preserved. Particular attention is paid to the glycosaminoglycans (GAG). Our capsules contain 7.5 mg (1.5%) of these acidic polysaccharides each. Due to their negative charge they can bind water and thus, for example, keep tissues elastic and act as a biological lubricant.
What are glycosaminoglycans and why are they important?
Glycosaminoglycans (GAG) are linear polysaccharides made up of repeating disaccharide units, comparable to a string of beads. They are also called mucopolysaccharides. They occur in many biological macromolecules, e.g. bound to proteins. GAGs form the framework of many fibrous substances. They can absorb many times their own weight in water, which makes them very elastic. GAGs include hyaluronic acid, heparin, chondroitin sulphate and keratan sulphate.

For our green-lipped mussel capsules we use only impeccable, laboratory-tested raw materials. The capsules are easy to swallow and the valuable green-lipped mussel powder largely passes through the gastrointestinal tract intact. This allows it to exert its effects where it benefits the body.
A cultivated, pristine natural beauty
In New Zealand the green-lipped mussel is a protected species. For this reason it is cultivated in aquaculture under protected conditions. The green-lipped mussel is therefore regarded — unlike other mussels — as pure and free from pollutants.
