Your questions about homeopathy and pregnancy answered

News

I always welcome your questions, from which I learn at least as much as you do. There is one topic that repeatedly prompts enquiries and is hotly debated in my Facebook forums:

“Dürfen Apis, Pulsatilla und Sepia in der Schwangerschaft eingenommen werden?”

So here is my answer — in black and white — so you can refer to it if needed. And the answer is — you probably guessed it:

“There is no blanket answer, because it always depends.”The big homeopathy book for pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding - Sandra Perko

Now, I bet that's not exactly what you wanted to hear, so let me explain it a little more.

You may have been taught that Apis, Pulsatilla and Sepia must not be given during pregnancy. I would not go so far as to say that these three remedies should never be taken, but I want to emphasise that they should really only be used when absolutely necessary and there is a clear indication. The three remedies must be used with caution, very wisely and with a knowledgeable and sensitive hand.

Apis for swelling

Apis is seldom indicated in pregnancy. However, it can be a very valuable remedy for severe conditions when there are marked, oedematous swellings, such as in an anaphylactic shock.

Suppose you are pregnant and eat a prawn cocktail for the first time in your life — and discover you are allergic to prawns. Apis C30 enjoys an excellent reputation as an emergency remedy, especially for severely swollen lips and a thick tongue. In such cases it can even be taken every five minutes — depending on how severe the reaction is — until a marked improvement of the symptoms occurs.

Pulsatilla for breech presentation

Pulsatilla can show remarkable effects towards the end of pregnancy, and we know that Pulsatilla can turn a baby in breech presentation in time before birth — provided it is given in the correct potency and at the correct intervals. (I have already written about this in detail here: The Natural Birth Part 1: Turning a Breech.)

Sepia in pregnancy

Sepia is, however, sometimes used during pregnancy. While it can be of considerable value under certain circumstances, it should only be prescribed by experienced homeopaths. This remedy requires a certain level of competence for correct prescribing.

Homeopathy as effective medicineThe Children's Homeopathy Handbook - Didier Grandgeorge

Why so much caution? The reason is simple: homeopathy is medicine! It requires — not always, but often — considerable competence, knowledge, experience and confidence to use it well and correctly. This healing method requires not only skill but also respect. I have often said, and say again now, that homeopathy is not 100 per cent safe but is relatively safe. We must be responsible — we must make smart, prudent and well-informed decisions and use this form of medicine wisely.

If you are pregnant and think you need one of these remedies, you should think carefully about it. Do not act hastily, but weigh up thoroughly the pros and cons. If you are still convinced by the indication in the end, you should only use low to medium potencies and stop the remedy as soon as an improvement is apparent.

If you want to be completely on the safe side, you should consult a professional homeopath.

Whatever you decide — homeopathy helps. Spread the word!

Warmly,

Yours,
