When summer gets tricky – my top five homeopathic favourites

News

Summer always brings plenty of sunshine and fun, but unfortunately we usually have to navigate the odd mishap as well.

With homeopathy we're well prepared for whatever the summer season throws at us. Here are my top favourites that I rely on to be well equipped for any eventuality:

Good heavens! (Aconitum napellus)

As mums we know our children spend far more time outdoors in summer. Outside, where there are exciting places that our children are almost magnetically drawn to, but which are never entirely without danger! Aconitum napellus (or simply aconite) is known for its soothing effect in states of shock. And believe me – as a mother I know that feeling all too well!

When my boys were little they naturally climbed the tallest tree they could find. Good heavens! I bet your children do the same; I also bet it drives you just as crazy as it did me. You know, when our children are jumping about in a tree like little monkeys, it's best to look the other way, because our nerves can hardly bear the stress.

But at least the little ones have so much fun!

Unfortunately a fall seems sooner or later unavoidable, and with a bit of luck they’ll only come away with minor injuries. Even then the child will be frightened and terribly upset about this absolute betrayal by gravity. In that situation Aconitum C200 is indicated, to be taken every few hours depending on the severity of the shock. This applies to your child as much as to you!

If your child is seriously injured, of course you should seek medical advice!

What a knock! (Arnica montana)shutterstock_212590303_kind_verletzt_web.gif

If the fall from the tree described above – and this also applies to other injuries – involves a blow to the head, I would first think of Arnica montana. Arnica is a well-established remedy for head injuries and is generally given in C200. Depending on the severity of the symptoms it can be taken hourly at first and then tapered off as symptoms improve.

Arnica is also an excellent remedy for bleeding and bruising (ecchymosis). With the summer months comes bikini season, and who wants to lounge by the pool with blue and yellow bruises on their legs? To avoid a fashion faux pas this summer, Arnica should not be missing from any travel first-aid kit!

Mum!!! (Calendula)

Scraped knees and elbows are part of growing up. In the hot summer months, when children romp about outside in shorts and short-sleeved T-shirts, it usually doesn't take long before the first scrapes need attention.

My children came home with so many grazes that I don't even want to start counting them. Scrapes and grazes may not be the worst injuries, but they are usually accompanied by a loud "Mum!!". Do you remember the times when virtually everything was treated with merbromin? The mums among you will surely recall. That antiseptic has rightly fallen out of favour, but even today many antiseptic ointments, gels and sprays are sold whose active ingredients are more than questionable.

The calendula plant is a natural antiseptic and is used together with water and soap for wound cleaning. For this purpose I prefer to use the mother tincture, i.e. the fresh plant is macerated in alcohol and distilled water and then filtered.

The wound is cleaned with diluted calendula mother tincture and covered with a plaster (a few drops on the plaster additionally promote wound healing). The dressing should be changed every few hours and freshly soaked with calendula.

Ouch! (Ledum palustre)

As if there weren't enough sharp things to bump into, in summer we are also plagued by little critters. In the air, on land and in the water they take aim at us. Ledum stands up to anything with a sting.

It has proven effective not only for insect stings but also for dog bites, cat bites, squirrel, tortoise and raccoon bites. (Ouch, that really hurts!)

Ledum helps with anything sharp that penetrates the body; puncture wounds can also be treated with it. (Just think of the many drawing pins carelessly lying on the ground in summer.)

It is best to take Ledum C200 immediately after a sting or bite, then four times daily until the complaints have clearly improved.

Also remember that Ledum is the first remedy for Lyme disease and should be taken immediately after a tick bite.

It's a scorcher! (Glonoinum)

Every summer there are those incredibly hot days when you feel like you're not living on Earth but directly on the sun – and it's humid too! I don't want to complain, but 35°C is hot. If the weather forecast then says it will feel like 40°C, people can react irritably. It's no longer fun.

This weather calls for the last of my top favourites: Glonoinum. When the heat feels like it's burning you, Glonoinum C30 can be taken every three hours to ease heat and sultriness. The remedy also helps with heatstroke.

It also helps women in the menopause who, in the course of their hot flushes, literally feel as if they might evaporate.

Arm yourself for summer!

These five homeopathics should always be with you: Aconitum, Arnica, Calendula, Ledum and Glonoinum. They fit into every home and travel first-aid kit, every handbag and waistcoat pocket, and will cope with all the uncertainties of summer.

Pass it on!
