The first remedy you come across when rummaging through a homeopathic family medicine chest is usually Aconitum napellus C200, or simply called Aconite.
The homeopathic characteristics of Aconite are easy to learn and make it easy even for beginners to use this wonderful remedy successfully.
I was therefore not surprised when one of my students told me that even her husband – who knows almost nothing about homeopathy – knows when and how to treat himself with Aconite.
“I think a cold is coming on,” he announced out of the blue, although he had shown no signs of illness all day.
“… then I’d better take a few pellets of Aconite, right?”
He is most likely correct in his assessment and the appropriate remedy in this case is Aconitum.
Let me briefly explain why…
Aconite is the indicated remedy for complaints that arise suddenly and without warning. So if you go to bed healthy and well and wake up in the morning with a sudden earache, you should certainly consider a homeopathic treatment with Aconite, because the symptoms appear quickly and abruptly. One could also put it this way: the symptoms come as a shock to our body.
If an improvement occurs after taking the homeopathic remedy, one would speak of an Aconite cold, precisely because the body was, so to speak, catapulted into the illness. In other conditions such as a bladder infection, sore throat or a burn, one would consider Aconite in cases where the complaints manifest in this very characteristic manner.
Aconitum napellus is a tried remedy for shock states that are accompanied by great fear.
For example, if you witness a serious traffic accident, this remedy will help you overcome the shock and the associated fear.
That, of course, also means that this remedy can be given instead of Arnica for injuries. This is especially the case when the injury occurs suddenly and the accompanying fright is great. Everything is fine and suddenly the bone is broken and the tissue is crushed.
Here too we should first look at the circumstances in which the injury occurred, and not only at the pathological changes themselves.
An important particularity of Aconite is that the remedy is typically given within the first 24–48 hours, because it is best suited to treating acute conditions. This rule of thumb applies to colds, influenza-like illnesses, middle ear infections and other acute inflammatory conditions, but not always to injuries.
After 24 hours the remedy should be discontinued and treatment continued with another indicated remedy. Here we see one of the most important peculiarities of Aconite – when it is indicated for an acute illness, it will produce the best results within the first 24 hours..jpg)
There are, of course, exceptions, but since I want to introduce you to Aconitum napellus here, you can safely commit this one feature to memory as a rule of thumb.
Take the example of Maria, who experienced a severe earthquake and still suffered panic attacks ten years later. In her case, Aconite should ideally have been given immediately after the earthquake.
Maria, however, only took Aconitum napellus C200 many years after the disaster, twice daily for several weeks, and it helped wonderfully. Maria was able to overcome her anxiety without psychotropic drugs and regain her inner calm and stability.
Another good example is what I call the ‘phantom sting’.
The children of one of my students were running around in knee-high grass when one of the boys was very painfully stung in the leg by an unidentified insect. Ouch! I believe the affected boy would, without hesitation, say that the sting came as a great shock! Ledum palustre C30 or C200 would have been the indicated remedy, but the mother did not have her homeopathic first-aid kit at hand.
She chose the one remedy she always carries with her. You don’t have to guess long to find the right remedy – it was Aconitum napellus.
The symptoms improved immediately and the swelling was kept under control until the family reached home and the mother could continue treating her son with Ledum. In the meantime panic and fear had disappeared and the symptoms usually associated with a sting did not develop.
This story is a lovely example of the wonderful effect of Aconite in acute complaints and I recommend everyone to always carry this remedy with them.
Aconite should be at hand in an emergency at all times!
As a mnemonic for the use of Aconite the phrase “Oh shock, let it ease” can serve. Commit this sentence to memory in connection with Aconite and you will remember it at the right moment.
Warm regards,
Yours, Joette
P.S. Tell me about your experiences with Aconite. I look forward to your feedback!
